NC State cornerback Shyheim Battle decided to forgo his final season of eligibility to pursue the NFL. Now, he has a chance to begin his professional career with a rookie mini camp invitation from the New York Jets, according to WRAL’s Pat Welter.

Battle, who did not hear his name called in Detroit, recorded 144 total tackles in his five seasons on the field, including a career-best 46 total stops this past fall. He also added 32 passes defended, seven interceptions, six tackles for a loss and one sack during his time with the Wolfpack.

The cornerback recorded two interceptions in each of the past three seasons, while he had at least six passes defended in that same time span. His breakout season, the 2020 campaign, had 11 passes defended with an interception in his first full season on the field.

This past season, Battle had six games with four or more tackles. He logged a season-best seven tackles in the Wolfpack’s loss to Kansas State in the Pop-Tarts Bowl. Battle recorded interceptions against Louisville and at then-No. 17 Duke, both gaining at least six yards after the turnover.

Battle also logged four passes defended this season, all in different games. He also recovered a fumble at Wake Forest in mid-November.

The Rocky Mount, N.C., native was a four-year starter during his time in Raleigh. Battle was an All-ACC honorable mention during the 2021 and 2023 campaigns for his action as a lockdown cornerback for the Wolfpack.

Battle will compete for a chance to earn a UDFA contract with the Jets. That will begin in the team’s rookie minicamp next month before OTAs and training camp begin.
