NC State is preparing for the NCAA tournament, but sophomore guard LJ Thomas won’t be with the team in Pittsburgh.

He entered the transfer portal Monday, the first day it was open for college basketball players. Thomas is the first NC State player to do so and he has been away from the team for at least the past week.

Thomas, who did not travel with the team to the ACC tournament in Washington, D.C., appeared in just 12 games this season. He averaged 2.6 points, 1.1 rebounds and 0.8 assists in just seven minutes a contest.

The Plant City, Fla., native played in 30 games a year ago with the Wolfpack. He averaged 2.4 points with 2.1 rebounds and 0.5 assists during his freshman season.

Thomas was an ACC All-Academic team pick last season. He scored a career best 14 points against Furman a year ago.

A three-star recruit, Thomas averaged 18.5 points, 4.2 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game at Durham (N.C.) Bull City Prep during the 2020-21 season.
