The ACC had its annual winter meetings this week in Charlotte, and the league announced a pair of changes that were voted on and approved by those in attendance, it announced Wednesday

Headlining the announcement was the new format for the men’s and women’s basketball ACC tournaments next season when the league expands to 18 teams. Throughout the ACC’s history, every team has been invited to the league tournament to compete for the conference title, but that will change starting next year.

Instead, it will be the top 15 teams from both the men’s and women’s sides that will compete for the championship in Greensboro, N.C. That means the bottom three teams in the league standings will not participate in the postseason. The conference also announced that men’s basketball will continue to play a 20-game league schedule, while the women will continue with the 18-game campaign.

In addition to the basketball news, the ACC announced it approved the use of two new technology initiatives for the 2024 football season, pending the final approval by the NCAA Football Rules Committee later this month. The approval was unanimous by the ACC head coaches and it will allow teams to be provided access to in-game video as well as coach-to-player one-way communication devices in helmets on the field.

Quote of the day

NC State graduate guard DJ Horne is playing at an elite level, and Wolfpack coach Kevin Keatts does not know where the team would be without him.

“He is playing at a high level, playing with a lot of emotion,” Keatts said. “To be quite honest with you, he has carried us the last three or four games. I’m happy for him. … He’s played really good basketball the entire year, he’s just played elite basketball the last four games. I don’t know where we would be at this moment without him.”
