NC State junior right-handed pitcher Andrew Shaffner was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 15th round with the 444th overall pick Monday afternoon.

Shaffner has one year of eligibility remaining and could elect to return to the Wolfpack if he were to choose to. He has until Aug. 1 to sign with the Reds after being drafted.

Shaffner had a career year at NC State this past spring. He tossed 37.1 innings with just 13 earned runs allowed on 33 hits with seven walks as he struck out 39 batters in 18 appearances from the bullpen. Opposing hitters were just .237 against the righty, while the reliever was able to post a 3.13 ERA.

The Elk Creek, Va., native led NC State with seven saves during the 2025 season, which led to Shaffner being named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Midseason Watch List.

Before Shaffner became one of the Wolfpack’s top leverage arms this spring, he spent the past two seasons as an innings eater. He logged a 3.86 ERA in 21 innings across 15 appearances as a freshman before throwing just 11 innings in seven appearances from the bullpen last spring. His best relief outing of his sophomore campaign came in the Athens Super Regional, where he tossed three perfect innings to earn the save in the Wolfpack’s 18-1 win over the Bulldogs to open the weekend.

Shaffner also experimented as a two-way player in 2024, going 1-for-6 with a walk, two RBI and three runs scored.

Shaffner is NC State’s seventh draft pick of the 2025 event. He joins junior lefty Dominic Fritton (4th round, Tampa Bay Rays), shortstop signee Aidan West (4th round, Los Angeles Dodgers) and right-handed pitcher signee CJ Gray (5th round, Los Angeles Angels), junior right-handed pitcher Shane Van Dam (9th round, Kansas City Royals), senior shortstop Justin DeCriscio (10th round, San Diego Padres) and junior outfielder Josh Hogue (15th round, Miami Marlins) as the Pack’s draft selections this weekend.
