NC State wanted to make a splash in the transfer portal. It was able to fill a lot of its needs in the early stages of the window, allowing for an opportunity to leave its mark at the end of the cycle.

And, well, it did just that as Texas Tech transfer forward Darrion Williams, the No. 3 available player in the portal, committed to the Wolfpack on Thursday afternoon. He has one year of eligibility remaining.

Williams, who stands at 6-foot-6, 225 pounds, was in the NBA Draft, but removed his name from the selection process on Tuesday. He impressed at the NBA Combine in Chicago, but after hearing feedback from teams, Williams elected to return to the collegiate ranks. NC State, which was on Williams from the start, maintained a presence in his portal recruitment that paid off.

Now, he’ll be able to boost his professional stock in Will Wade’s system for his final season of college basketball.

Williams, who began his career at Nevada as the Mountain West Rookie of the Year in 2022-23, blossomed into one of the top stars in all of college basketball at Texas Tech. He has scored 1,140 points with 674 rebounds, 295 assists and 128 steals in 100 career games at the Division I level.

Williams averaged 15.1 points with 5.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.3 steals as a junior with the Red Raiders. He impressed during Texas Tech’s Sweet 16 run, pacing the team with 21 points an outing, including a season-best 28 points in the second round win over Drake.

The All-Big 12 First Team selection posted 27 double-figure scoring efforts this past season, including nine games with 20 points or more. He also posted a season-best 11 assists against Northwestern State and logged a 21-point, 10-rebound double-double against Northern Colorado.

In his first season at Texas Tech, Williams led the Red Raiders with nine double-double performances, while he averaged 13.1 points and 8.1 rebounds in Big 12 play. Although he put a solid sophomore campaign together, Williams’ 2023-24 season came to an end in the first round of the NCAA Tournament as NC State started its magical run to the Final Four. Williams scored 10 points with seven rebounds, six assists and no turnovers in that game.

While the Wolfpack ended his first trip to the NCAA Tournament with a Power Conference squad, now he’ll be looking to make his mark in NC State’s red and white moving forward. NC State has two scholarships remaining for the 2025-26 season.
