The NC State football team won its season opener for the sixth straight year, including the second time in a row on the road, by topping a tough UConn squad 24-14 in East Hartford, Conn. The result sets up the Wolfpack for a marquee showdown next Saturday in the home opener — highly ranked Notre Dame.

Kickoff for the contest vs. the Fighting Irish will be at noon in Carter-Finley Stadium and can be seen on ABC.

TheWolfpack.com staff of Matt Carter and Ethan McDowell break down the perhaps tougher-than-expected win at UConn in the latest edition of The Wolfpacker Show.

Among the many topics discussed:

• From the glass half-full perspective, what is there to make of the NC State football team that did show some promising starting points: a stout defense (for most of the evening), good special teams play and a strong performance from Virginia transfer and super senior quarterback Brennan Armstrong in his Wolfpack debut?

• From the glass half-empty perspective, are the continuing issues from last year of a lack of explosiveness in the passing game and struggles in short yardage situations concerning? How about the play of the offensive line, or the inability to consistently stop the UConn running game?

• While the show was recording, news dropped that the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) was adding three new teams: Cal, SMU and Stanford. Both Ethan and Matt offer instant reactions to the development and how that might impact the conference going forward.

• Who gets The Wolfpacker’s game balls from the NC State win? Both Matt and Ethan went with the more obvious candidates in their respective selections, each choosing one from the opposite sides of the football.

• And much more!
