Husker assistant Armon Gates leaving for job at Oregon
Mulitple sources close to the Nebraska men’s basketball program confirmed to On3 on Friday that Husker assistant coach Armon Gates will be moving on for a job on Oregon’s staff.
NU head coach Fred Hoiberg confirmed Gates’ departure on Friday evening.
“Armon Gates has informed me that he is leaving Nebraska to take another coaching position,” Hoiberg said in a press release. “I appreciate all of Armon’s contributions to Husker Basketball over the past four-plus seasons, as he has been a valuable member of our coaching staff since I arrived three years ago.
“I wish Armon, his wife Ashley and his family all the best as he begins his new endeavor. Looking forward, we will be diligent in finding the right person to join our coaching staff to continue to help us build our program.”
Gates, who was hired by former NU coach Tim Miles in 2018, has spent the past four seasons in Lincoln after being retained by Hoiberg.

Working primarily with Nebraska’s guards, Gates played a significant role in individual player development, game planning, and opponent scouting. However, he was not the lead recruiter on any NU signee that made it to campus in his four seasons.
Gates’ departure leaves Hoiberg once again with a spot to fill on his coaching staff for the 2022-23 season. The Huskers just replaced former assistant Matt Abdelmassih with South Alabama’s Adam Howard, who was hired in April.
Oregon was in search of another assistant coach after Chris Crutchfield left Dana Altmann’s staff after one season to take the head coaching position at Omaha in March.
