Huskers drop series finale to Michigan but win the weekend

Nebraska baseball (26-26, 13-14) fell to Michigan (32-19, 15-12) by a score of 3-1 on Sunday but still took the series after winning both Friday and Saturday’s games.
The Huskers trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh when Hogan Helligso sparked a two-out rally with a walk. Riley Silva followed by reaching on an error by Michigan’s second baseman, setting the stage for Joshua Overbeek, who delivered a clutch two-out RBI single to left, tying the game at 1-1.

Michigan responded quickly in the eighth inning. A pair of bunt singles, combined with a throwing error on a bunt attempt by Nebraska pitcher Drew Christo, allowed the Wolverines to retake the lead. Michigan added an insurance run in the ninth when Cole Caruso blasted his second home run of the day, this time off reliever Luke Broderick. Caruso’s first homer, a solo shot, came in the second inning off of Jackson Brockett to put Michigan on the board.
Pitching shines despite loss
Senior left-hander Brockett was sharp in his final start at Haymarket Park, going 5.1 innings while allowing just one earned run on two hits. He struck out three Wolverines across 93 pitches. This weekend marked one of Nebraska’s strongest pitching performances of the season, with three quality starts setting a foundation for momentum heading into the Big Ten Tournament.

Offensively, the Huskers managed just seven hits, three of which came from Overbeek. Silva, Cayden Brumbaugh, Dylan Carey, and Helligso recorded the other base knocks. Head coach Will Bolt expressed frustration with the lineup’s overall approach, stating Nebraska needed to play “perfect baseball” to win, given the struggles at the plate.
Despite the loss, Nebraska made a significant stride in its quest for the Big Ten Tournament. The Huskers entered the weekend in ninth place but now find themselves in a strong position to secure a spot in Omaha. Nebraska will have a quick turnaround as it heads to West Lafayette for a three-game series against Purdue starting Thursday.
