Nebraska baseball HC Will Bolt after Nebraska's series win over South Alabama

Following a series win against South Alabama, Nebraska baseball won its first Big Ten Weekly honor of the season on Monday afternoon.

Infielder Rhett Stokes laid claim to this week’s Big Ten Player of the Week award.

Stokes left quite the first impression when making his Haymarket Park debut. The New Mexico Military Institute transfer entered the weekend with a .111 batting average. Stokes proceeded to go 3-for-4 in each of his next three games and totaled four doubles and five RBIs for the series. Of his nine hits, six came with two outs including all of his doubles.

For the year, Stokes now leads Nebraska is batting average among players with at least 20 at-bats. The bottom third of the Husker order hit .606 for the past weekend in large part due to Stokes’ efforts.

“Stokes has been huge,” Bolt said following Saturday’s win over South Alabama. “I’m impressed by his ability to lay down a bunt and two-strike hit. He had another big two-out hit (Saturday) to score a run. Those guys are playing well.”

Also honored this week were Iowa left-handed pitcher Cade Obermueller who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning against Jacksonville State on Saturday. He allowed two hits and struck out nine batters over 5 2/3 innings of work.

Purdue first baseman Luke Gaffney and Minnesota right-handed pitcher Kyle Remmington won Co-Freshman of the Week recognition.
