Outside hitter Shaye Witherspoon commits to Nebraska volleyball, marks 4 commits in 2 days

6-foot-3 outside hitter Shaye Witherspoon is Nebraska volleyball’s fourth commit in the last two days. Witherspoon adds her name to the Huskers’ impressive Class of 2027 commits.

The Wildwood, Mo. native is the No. 10 prospect by PrepDig and the No. 11 player according to PrepVolleyball.com. The Huskers secured two top 10 players in Witherspoon and middle blocker Kendall Omoruyi, the top player according to PrepDig.

“I am beyond grateful and SUPER excited to announce my verbal commitment to play volleyball at the University of Nebraska, where I will be continuing my academic and athletic career!!!” she said on Instagram.

The outside hitter hit .379 and recorded 4.4 kills per set as a sophomore at Lafayette High School in Wildwood, Mo. The six-rotation player added 95 blocks, 38 aces and 160 digs. She recorded nearly 450 kills on 878 attacks in 2024.

Witherspoon led the Lancers to back-to-back Missouri Class 5 State Championships. Lafayette has won three straight Class 5 titles. The powerhouse won six-straight Class 4 State titles from 2011-2016.

She plays club for Rockwood Thunder. Rockwood’s website says Witherspoon can touch 10-foot-6 with her approach and 9-foot-6 for her block.

The 6-foot-3 outside hitter was a standout at Nebraska’s 2024 Dream Team Camp at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Witherspoon was one of 19 athletes selected to try out for the U.S. U19 National Team to compete at the NORCECA Pan American Cup. She is an alternate for the Pan American Cup in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. She and 2027 Nebraska libero commit Hua Laikona both tried out and are alternates.

Witherspoon is one of likely five pieces to Nebraska volleyball’s Class of 2027 and Dani Busboom Kelly‘s first recruiting class.

In-state setter Malorie Boesiger was the Huskers’ first commit. The younger sister of Husker senior Maisie Boesiger missed her sophomore season with a knee injury. She averaged 11.4 assists per set as a freshman for Norris High School in Firth, Neb.

Middle blocker Kendall Omoruyi and libero Hua Laikona are both 2027 Nebraska commits and play for Arizona Storm, one of the top clubs in the country. Husker freshmen Teraya Sigler and Kenna Cogill also played for the Storm.

Omoruyi is the top player in the Class of 2027 according to PrepDig.com. As a sophomore, she hit .342 and recorded 2.7 kills per set and 0.8 blocks per set. at Casteel High School in Queen Creek, Ariz. Laikona is an outside hitter for Mesa (Ariz.) High School. She averaged 3.3 kills and 2.7 digs per set as a sophomore.
