True freshman tight end Yasir Smith is no longer part of the UNC football program, according to multiple sources. Smith, a 6-foot-5, 265-pound, did not appear in any games for the Tar Heels this season.

On National Signing Day, Smith signed with UNC despite never having visited the school. The Tar Heel staff extended an offer just two days before his commitment. He enrolled at UNC in the summer.

Smith had officially visited East Carolina the weekend prior to Signing Day and was widely expected to sign with the Pirates before UNC’s late offer. His brother, Yannick, a former four-star wide receiver, signed with ECU in the 2024 class.

Smith also held offers from East Tennessee State, Florida Atlantic, Georgia State, and Charleston Southern.

As a 2025 recruit, the Rivals Industry Ranking rated Smith a mid-three-star prospect and ranked him as the No. 139 edge rusher in the nation and No. 31 prospect in South Carolina.

UNC (2-4 overall, 0-2 ACC) meets No. 16 Virginia (6-1, 3-0), one of three unbeaten teams remaining in ACC league play, on Saturday
