Newsstand: Former Michigan receiver critical of Kyle Hamilton, Notre Dame

Former Michigan wide receiver Braylon Edwards, who lost to Notre Dame two out of three years while playing for the Wolverines (2002 & 2004), doesn’t want to see Fighting Irish safety Kyle Hamilton going to the Detroit Lions.
Woodward Sports tweeted a video Monday where Edwards and host Ryan Ermanni discussed one player they didn’t want to see going No. 2. They agreed on Hamilton as their choice.
“There’s something about Notre Dame that just doesn’t translate to the NFL,” Edwards said. “I look at all of these great players who Notre Dame has had in college; they don’t pan out in the league. If you want to specifically focus on the safety position — Tom Zbikowski, nothing. Glenn Earl, nothing. Gerome Sapp, nothing. They don’t pan out in the league.
“If you want to draft a guy No. 2 to play safety, he’s got to be a game changer. He’s got to be a guy that you win games because of. He has to be a guy who the other team is scared to play against — they have to come up with a game plan for.”
Edwards noted how the safety is essentially the quarterback of the defense and has a ton of responsibilities. He doesn’t foresee Hamilton thriving in that role, although he didn’t offer any reasons as to why that is.

“Kyle Hamilton has to worry about the whole field and every body,” explained Edwards. “I don’t want to put that type of pressure on a guy that I don’t believe in. That’s why I don’t want Kyle Hamilton at No. 2. He’s a really good player but not at two.”
We’ll offer one name for Edwards to research: Harrison Smith — a six-time Pro Bowler who has done pretty well for himself as a safety coming out of Notre Dame.

“I think it’s the standard that has been set when he got there. Double-digit wins, try to go to the College Football Playoff. They’ve been in the hunt for that the last five years. That’s what the expectation is.”
