Live updates: Ohio State downs No. 5 Notre Dame 21-10 in season opener

COLUMBUS — Ohio State and Notre Dame will kick off for the seventh time in their history. The Buckeyes are 4-2 against the Fighting Irish all-time. Ohio State hasn’t lost to Notre Dame since 1936 and has won four straight over the Irish.

Ohio State-Notre Dame fourth quarter updates

End of game. Ohio State kneels. Buckeyes beat the Fighting Irish 21-10 in a top-5 season opener. Ohio State out-gained the Irish 395 yards to 253. C.J. Stroud threw for 223 yards and two touchdowns. Miyan Williams scored the Buckeyes’ lone rushing touchdown and added 84 yards on the ground.

3:21 4Q Incredible punt by Notre Dame punter Jon Sot. 75-yard punt pins Ohio State at its own 11-yard line. A three-and-out for the Irish — Mike Hall picked up a huge third down sack on Tyler Buchner, leading to a fourth-and-21.

RB Miyan Williams puts Buckeyes up 11

4:51 4Q Touchdown, Ohio State. Miyan Williams repeatedly muscled his way through the Notre Dame defense, carrying the Buckeyes offense down the field. He caps the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. Buckeyes lead 21-10 after a made extra point.

11:57 4Q Notre Dame punts to the Ohio State 5-yard line after an offensive pass interference penalty stalled the Irish drive.

Ohio State-Notre Dame third quarter updates

End of the third quarter. Ohio State leads 14-10. Notre Dame with the ball on its own 45-yard line after a 32-yard pass by Tyler Buchner.

Xavier Johnson’s first TD gives Buckeyes the lead

0:17 3Q Touchdown, Ohio State. 24-yard strike from C.J. Stroud to Xavier Johnson puts the Buckeyes up 14-10. Extra point good. Johnson’s first career touchdown.

5:00 3Q Notre Dame punts to the Ohio State 30-yard line. Irish tight end Michael Mayer picked up a long first down for Notre Dame on third-and-6, bringing the ball out of their own red zone. Ohio State’s defense held from there, aided by a Tommy Eichenberg tackle for loss.

8:36 3Q Ohio State punts on fourth-and-2 to the Notre Dame 12-yard line. The Ohio State offense is still not able to find any consistency. Irish take over up 10-7.

11:53 3Q Buckeyes hold the Irish offense to a punt. Fair catch from Egbuka places the Ohio State offense at its 7-yard line. Notre Dame’s drive was extended by a personal foul after Buchner was hit while sliding. 

14:20 3Q Ohio State goes three-and-out on its first drive of the second half. An Ohio State unnecessary roughness penalty is added on to the punt and Notre Dame begins its drive at its own 44-yard line.

Ohio State will begin the second half with the ball at its own 25-yard line. Buckeyes trail 10-7.

Ohio State-Notre Dame second quarter updates

Halftime. Notre Dame leads Ohio State 10-7. Irish out-gained the Buckeyes 181 yards to 149 yards in the first half.

5:31 2Q Buckeyes bring pressure on third down and force an incompletion from Tyler Buchner. A targeting review produces no penalty, so the Irish punt the ball away. Ohio State takes over on its own 24-yard line down 10-7.

Irish lead after Estime rushing score

11:56 2Q Touchdown, Irish. Notre Dame’s Audric Estime punches it in the end zone from the Ohio State 1-yard line and the Irish take a 10-7 lead. A pair of long passes from Tyler Buchner set the Irish up inside the Ohio State red zone. Extra point good.

Buckeyes-Fighting Irish first quarter updates

End of the first quarter. Ohio State leads Notre Dame, 7-3. Irish with the ball, third-and-2 on their own 35-yard line when play resumes.

3:28 1Q Ohio State captain linebacker Tommy Eichenberg sacks Tyler Buchner on third down, forcing Notre Dame to punt. Buckeyes defensive coordinator Jim Knowles brought a blitz and Eichenberg broke through the Irish line. Ohio State begins its drive from its own 28-yard line.

5:32 1Q Ohio State kicked off from the 50-yard line after a Notre Dame personal foul on the extra point attempt. Notre Dame starts its drive from the 25.

Buckeyes on the board with Emeka Egbuka TD

5:32 1Q Touchdown, Ohio State. C.J. Stroud throws a 31-yard pass to Emeka Egbuka on third down and the Buckeyes take a 7-3 lead. Extra point good. It’s the first touchdown of the season for C.J. Stroud and the Ohio State offense.

7:06 1Q Ohio State forces a Notre Dame punt and will take over with great field position at its own 46-yard line. The Buckeyes offense trots onto the field for its second drive of the game.

Wide receiver Julian Fleming is taking part in pregame warmups for the Buckeyes. He is a game-time decision.

Ohio State’s six captains: wide receiver Kam Babb, linebacker Tommy Eichenberg, defensive lineman Tyler Friday, tight end Cade Stover, quarterback C.J. Stroud and safety Kourt Williams.

Ohio State will honor the 2002 national championship team for the 20th anniversary of the Buckeyes’ undefeated season, which culminated in knocking off defending champion Miami.
