That was a short little detour for Clayton Custer, who will be returning to OU. Source confirms Custer, who had been an assistant at Loyola (Chicago) will be coming back to Norman as an assistant coach for Porter Moser at Oklahoma.

If you want to read in between the lines, Moser gave hints when he was asked last week about what he was looking for with the final assistant spot.

“There’s a lot that will go into people that I know,” Moser said. “People who know me. I’ve had a lot of guys leave so somebody who I feel will stay here for some time. Somebody that I know and trust is a factor. Not to say that’s an end-all. But it’s gotta be somebody that knows what we’re doing. Knows my system.”

Does anybody know Moser’s system more than Custer? From his playing days at Loyola to working under Moser with the Ramblers to coming with Moser to OU for these last two seasons. Custer has seen it all from every perspective.

The continuity factor makes all the sense in the world. Custer has already built relationships with returning guys like Otega Oweh and Milos Uzan.

Custer was Loyola’s director of team development for the 2020-21 season, also under Moser. At OU, Custer’s role has been as director of video operations and player development.

Moser had to dip back into the assistant waters after an unexpected departure a couple of weeks ago. Emanuel Dildy left OU for an assistant spot at Duke.

It had become a reoccurring trend here for Moser where his assistants have been making moves up the ladder. His first-year assistants at OU are now in very high-profile spots. KT Turner is the head coach at UT-Arlington and David Patrick has the same role at Sacramento State.

“One of the biggest things is somebody who is going to build this thing with me,” Moser said.

Hiring Custer is the type of move that should allow that to happen. The roster is set, the coaching staff is set. It’s now all about the on-court product for the Sooners coming up this season.
