Deantre Prince, the senior cornerback from Charleston, MS, get a first hand look at the quarterback competition being waged this spring between transfer Jaxson Dart and Luke Altmyer, both sophomores.

After nearly two weeks of spring ball, Prince says he can’t see much difference in the two.

“Both of them throw balls I can’t get to,” said Prince, who is sponsored by Greer Law Firm in Tupleo (662)842-5345. “They have different talents but they are both great quarterbacks.

I’m looking forward to seeing which one wins the job.”

Deantre feels the 2022 Rebel defense will pick up where it left off last year – as a solid unit – and should be even better.

“We came together as a team and a defense last summer and we got better as the year progressed, I believe. We formed a brotherhood and we played for each other,” he continued. “We welcome any new players and we are for whoever the coaches put on the field.

“I like the fact that we push each other to be better players and the best man wins.”

Individually, Prince is trying to learn all the DB positions this spring. He already knows the ins and outs of cornerback, but now he’s trying to learn the inside jobs – safety.

“I want to be a better all around player and the coaches are allowing me to get my feet wet on the inside,” said ‘Tre”. “I look forward to the challenge. Our coaches are the type that they want us to know everything and I like it that way.

“Once I started learning the safety position, I started liking it a lot and became more interested in it. I’m doing everything I can to help the team and prepare myself for any chance I might have on the next level.”

Deantre says the competition in the secondary is very good.

“There’s not a lot of difference in the ones and the twos and that’s only going to make us better in the long run. Like I said, we pull for each other and play as a team, but we are all out there competing,” he noted. “By the time the season rolls around it will be more defined as to who are the ones and twos, but right now it’s not real clear, which is a good thing.”

Of the young guys, Prince mentioned sophomore Trey Washington and freshman Davison Igbinosun as players who have caught his eye.

“Those guys have been balling. As a senior, I’m trying to do everything I can to help them progress and to groom them into SEC corners and safeties,” he explained. “There are others too, but those two have stood out to me on defense.”

On offense, there have also been some newcomers who Prince praised.

“Most definitely (Michael) Trigg. Number 4 (Quinshon Judkins) and Zach Evans have shown me a lot. Judkins runs really hard and it’s easy to see why Evans was highly recruited,” Prince added.

The main communicators in the secondary are the safeties – A.J. Finley and Otis Reese.

“A.J. and Otis are the top two who talk the most and keep everyone on the same page. We are all just learning to communicate with them and let them direct the traffic,” he closed.

There’s a lot going on at spring football right now as the coaches try to get a head start on molding the ’22 team.

No doubt, Deantre Prince will be one of the main pieces.
