In this edition of Talk of Champions, Ben Garrett of the Ole Miss Spirit is joined by veteran Rebel safety Isheem Young to discuss the Rebels’ off-season work, as well as fall camp fast-approaching, a new defense under Pete Golding, his impressions of the newcomers (transfers and freshmen) and much, much more.

Young is a former decorated transfer from Iowa State. He’s entering his second season at Ole Miss. Young last season played in all 13 games over an 8-5 season. The Rebels reached the postseason for the third straight year. Young had 66 total tackles — including 30 solos — to go along with an interception, three pass breakups, a fumble recovery, 1.5 tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks.

Ole Miss is working him at all three safety positions in its 4-2-5 scheme. Young has even drawn snaps at MONEY — the defense’s hybrid safety/linebacker spot. Five-star-plus 2023 signee Suntarine Perkins has worked there, too. Young is also having to now contend with a 20-man transfer class that netted Ole Miss 13 new defenders.

Seven came in the defensive backfield.

“I think it’s going to be the best Isheem Young for anybody to ever see this season and this fall camp,” Young said.

Young also touched on his invaluable partnership with the Grove Collective.

The Grove Collective is the leading NIL (name, image and likeness) avenue of Ole Miss athletics. Former Rebel footballer Walker Jones is the Grove Collective’s Executive Director.

“I appreciate the Grove Collective a lot,” Young said. “They mean a lot to me. Appreciate them for everything they do, for sure. I know every other player feels the same way. I think they play a big part on this team with the NIL part, too.”
