Dan Lanning and the University of Oregon have reportedly agreed to a contract extension.

Columnist John Canzano reported Tuesday evening that the Ducks’ second-year coach is set to ink an extension through the 2028 season that would “put his salary in the top 15-20 nationally.”

The University of Oregon Board of Trustees will meet Thursday to approve the extension.

In December 2021, Lanning signed a six-year deal worth $29.1 million that was set to run through 2027.

In his first season at the helm of the Oregon program, he led the Ducks to a 10-3 finish and Holiday Bowl victory over North Carolina.

In 2023, the Ducks will look to build upon that and push for their first New Year’s Six Bowl appearance since the 2020 season. They will do so with a re-tooled staff after former offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham departed to become the head coach at Arizona State this offseason. Safeties coach Matt Powledge and offensive line coach Adrian Klemm left for other jobs, too.

In order to replace them, Lanning hired former UTSA OC Will Stein for the same position. He also added co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Chris Hampton (Tulane) and offensive line coach A’lique Terry (Minnesota Vikings) to his on-field staff.

The Ducks return an impressive collection of offensive talent that includes quarterback Bo Nix, running back Bucky Irving, and receiver Troy Franklin.

On the defensive side of the ball, Oregon returns defensive end Brandon Dorlus and linebacker Jeffrey Bassa, among several other standouts.

Throughout the offseason, Oregon was among the most prolific programs in the country when it came to utilizing the transfer portal. Lanning and his staff saw 30 scholarship players enter the portal and 14 players join UO via the portal.

The Ducks also added a recruiting class that is the eighth-best in the nation, according to the On3 Industry Ranking.

“We have over 45 newcomers on scholarship, almost over 50 players on our team that are new to our roster,” Lanning said during Pac-12 Media Day last week. “You hope that they do a great job of transitioning in with the guys that we already have here. Some great veteran leadership exists on our team. But one thing that’s been great is the opportunities that we get to spend together away from football. I think that makes that transition that much smoother for our players”

The Ducks will open their 2023 season against Portland State at Autzen Stadium on Sept. 2.
