Once again, Penn State basketball spun embarrassment into success. Upsetting No. 11 Wisconsin on Tuesday night at the Bryce Jordan Center, 87-83, the Nittany Lions shook off a bludgeoning at Purdue just three days prior.

And they did it by staying the course, said head coach Mike Rhoades. Avoiding the temptation to overreact in either direction, the program’s mentality of continuing to work toward its goals took hold.

“You don’t beat them down, number one. They know. You’re embarrassed. If you’re a true competitor, you show up the next day and go to work. So I’m not gonna beat them down,” he said. “We were embarrassed and I’m embarrassed as a coach when those games happen. But I’m waking up the next day and I got to do better.

“I’m not making excuses. Work them really hard, love them harder. Good days and bad days, no matter what. So I think we have a group of guys that do compete when we handle adversity, in-game adversity, and we don’t get down so much, I think at times like today, you see some good basketball.”

Saying that his Penn State team was “above it all” in how it responded to a back-and-forth rock fight with the Badgers, Rhoades’ Nittany Lions will be called to do it again this weekend. Set to take on Ohio State, the Buckeyes will be looking for revenge from an 83-80 win for the hosts at the Bryce Jordan Center on Dec. 9.
