Post-July Breakdown: Purdue recruiting target Jamyn Sondrup

Following our on-site coverage of numerous June and July recruiting events this summer, GoldandBlack.com will bring you in-depth analyses of several of the Boilermakers’ top basketball recruiting targets in coming weeks, to give you a look at their games, their personalities and their potential fits should they wind up at Purdue.

SCOUTING REPORT: PURDUE TARGET JAMYN SONDRUP
The 6-foot-9, 230-some-pound Sondrup may play center at the next level or may project as a jumbo power forward, or perhaps both. Either he’s best categorized as Trey Kaufman-Renn, Caleb Swanigan or Caleb Furst would have been, as a combo big man as opposed to a true center or true 4 man, a position that’s getting smaller all across basketball.
Sondrup does combine a bit of both, though.
He’s not a 7-footer, but he’s a big body and load to handle physically. He has the ability to be a really effective rebounder because of his ability to occupy space and opponents’ bodies. He probably won’t get up over everyone else on the floor, but he’ll carve out his space effectively and his strong hands are assets.
Offensively, the back-to-the-basket scoring skill set reminds of Trevion Williams, and Sondrup, like Williams, is an elite passer out of the post, prone sometimes to play to pass instead of to score, which is a good problem to have.
Further, Sondrup is an excellent three-point shooter whose pick-and-roll potential would lie most in short-roll-type actions, more like Kaufman-Renn. But the three-point shooting threat is really a big deal, not just in its effectiveness but in terms of what influence it could have over how defenses guard Sondrup in pick-and-roll.

PERSONALITY PROFILE
A really energetic, positive and overt personality, Sondrup’s demonstrative nature on the floor is absolutely something college coaches should be drawn to. He is as active a talker as you’ll find among high school big men, and as centers become more and more engaged as air traffic control in ball-screen defense and intricate switching schemes, the communication piece of it is so valuable.
For his body type, Sondrup is a high-motor, high-energy big man, though he doesn’t move so fast that it’s plainly obvious how hard he’s playing, if that makes sense.
THE POTENTIAL PURDUE FIT
Purdue’s got a great track record with players like this, down-low scorers who can make decisions and pass out of the post. Purdue plays through the post more than anyone, but also uses its bigs extensively in dribble-hand-off action, high-low situations and ball screens. Sondrup’s size, passing and gravity as a three-point threat (in the best-case scenario) could make him a real weapon. He won’t be the quickest, most athletic defender, but Purdue has built a system defensively that really provides a great deal of collective support for its bigs.
That’s the best way to put it: Purdue knows what to do with players like this. Size and skill and energy can work anywhere, though, but there is a clear type in West Lafayette.
