Purdue picks up commitment from 2025 JUCO linebacker

Purdue added another young linebacker to its defense on Saturday night, picking up a commitment from College of DuPage linebacker BJ Mayes, as was first reported by On3’s Steve Wiltfong and Pete Nakos.
The class of 2023 recruit was a Kenwood Academy product who went to Maine out of high school. He played four games for the Black Bears, tallying six total tackles. After a one year stint at Maine, Mayes opted to go to the JUCO level, where he suited up for the NJCAA Division III Champion DuPage Chaps. In nine games last season, he racked up 29 solo tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and a sack, as well as two interceptions.
Purdue has now added a sixth linebacker that has collegiate experience this off-season, with Mayes joining UNLV transfers Charles Correa and Mani Powell, Arkansas transfers Alex Sanford and Carson Dean and Tennessee State transfer Sanders Ellis. Defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Michael Scherer now gets another potential up-and-coming linebacker for the future of Purdue’s defense.
