2023 McKinney (Tex.) quarterback Keldric Luster committed to SMU, he announced on Thursday as he took an unofficial visit to the Hilltop. The 5-10, 200-pound signal caller is entering his first year at McKinney after transferring in this offseason.

On3 ranks Luster as the No. 57 quarterback nationally and No. 137 overall prospect in Texas. Army, Air Force, Indiana, Navy, Austin Peay and Texas Southern are among the offers Luster had on his resume as well.

Quarterbacks coach Johnny Brewer has recruited Luster for a while now and has the Mustangs right near the top because of that.

“Coach Brewer, that’s my guy,” Keldric Luster said after earning the offer. “He understood me from the first phone call we had to last. A lot of coaches may not want me because my height, but coach Brewer looks past that. He believes me and trusts in me and that’s what I like.”

SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee impresses Luster as well.

“I feel like it’s a great plan,” he said. “He wants guys that are gonna win him ball games for the next few years and what he’s got going on up there, it’s really making a big name for SMU.”

In 2021, he was the Texas District 7-5A-II Overall MVP as a junior at Frisco Liberty. He completed 245-of-356 passes (68%) for 3,435 passing yards and 30 touchdowns with just four interceptions. He added 182 rushes for 1,579 yards and 23 scores on the ground.

Luster was limited to six games as a sophomore due to injury, but was still named the District 7-5A-II Offensive Newcomer of the Year. He passed for 1,603 yards with nine touchdowns and four interceptions on 98-of-155 passes with 795 yards and 17 scores on the ground before his breakout junior year.

Keldric Luster jumps on board as SMU’s 2023 QB commit

The Mustangs have five other commitments in the class of 2023. Lucas (Tex.) Lovejoy wide receiver Jaxson Lavender started things off before Frisco (Tex.) linebacker Brandon Miyazono and Dallas (Tex.) South Oak Cliff wide receiver Randy Reece jumped on board. In May, offensive lineman Narado Stoker and athlete Abdul Muhammad joined Reece as SOC teammates committed to SMU.
