LSU cornerback Jaelyn Davis-Robinson entered the NCAA Transfer Portal this month and committed to SMU, he announced on Twitter. Davis-Robinson was on SMU’s campus in December for an unofficial visit.

The Waxahachie, Texas, native spent just one year in Baton Rouge, playing two games to retain his redshirt for the year. There were positive reports out of fall camp that he is one of the young defensive backs to be excited about, but with the influx of transfers, he was unable to get on the field for any meaningful snaps.

He was just talked up by the LSU staff as having the potential to emerge in a thin room for the Citrus Bowl.

“We protected some guys this year – Quency Wiggins and Jaelyn Davis-Robinson – there’s some young guys that need some work that I think this is going to be an effective first couple of of 4-5 practices where we can really lean on them,” LSU head coach Brian Kelly said last month as bowl practices began.

Out of high school, Davis-Robinson was rated 88.30 by the On3 Consensus, making him the No. 50 cornerback in the 2022 class and the No. 77 player in Texas. During his recruitment, he also visited Wyoming, UNLV, and Oregon, with the Ducks being a major player in his recruitment.

Jaelyn Davis-Robinson continues SMU red hot transfer run

Davis-Robinson joins Texas A&M transfers PJ Williams and LJ Johnson, Liberty transfers Rocket RahimiChris Megginson and Ahmad Walker, Fresno State transfer defensive back Cale Sanders, Missouri transfer offensive lineman Hyrin White, Miami transfers Key’Shawn SmithJordan MillerElijah RobertsJaylan Knighton, West Virginia transfer defensive back Charles Woods and Stanford defensive back Jonathan McGill as transfer commits for SMU.

Head coach Rhett Lashlee and his staff are enjoying plenty of portal success. Davis-Robinson is the latest to join a retooled defense for Scott Symons.

“Long term, linebacker and possibly edge and possibly a d-tackle still,” Symons told On3. “When I say long term, I’m saying you’ve got your mid-year spots and you’ve got your May guys. Trying to balance who you’re taking at mid-year with limited mid-year spots and how you can set yourself up for the best available in May is kind of the name of the game. I think you’ll see some more DBs come in January.”

SMU has a Top 5 transfer portal class, according to the On3 Transfer Portal Team Rankings.
