Rhett Lashlee reviews 2024 SMU signing class

SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee met with reporters on Wednesday for National Signing Day. Before he got into the 2024 recruiting class, Lashlee noted some key stats for the Mustangs this season.

“Obviously, we were able to win a conference championship. Able to finish ranked in all three polls, cool stat in the last five years nobody’s won more games in the state of Texas than SMU, which is cool,” Lashlee said in his opening statement. “We got a lot of momentum, a lot of exciting things going on here with the Weber EndZone football facility that will be opening up hopefully in July. We’ll be moving in there, progress is great.

“When you look at just what our team was able to accomplish this year, there’s only two teams in the country that finished with the Top 20 total offense, scoring offense, and the Top 20 total defense and scoring defense, and it’s SMU and Georgia. So I thought we had great balance on the team. I think it’s no coincidence we had a good defense, we won a championship. You look at No. 1 in the country in touchdown scored by our defense, No. 2 in sacks, No. 4 in 3rd down defense, No. 11 in scoring defense, No. 12 in total defense. I just think what Scott Symons and those guys did was incredible.

“Then on the offensive side sixth in the country in the first downs, eighth in scoring, eighth in red zone offense, tenth in fewest sacks allowed, sixteenth in total offense, just good team ball. It was really fun to be a part of this season. We’re excited about our move to the ACC. Doesn’t become official, I know, till the summer, but for us fall sports, we’re already kind of rolling into that.”

SMU is set for its first season in the Atlantic Coast Conference as the Mustangs welcome programs like BYU, TCU, Florida State and others to Ford Stadium for the 2024 season.
