Friday night at 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPN, SMU will take on Navy inside Ford Stadium. The Mustangs are looking to bounce back from three straight losses with a third straight win over the Midshipmen.

SMU’s coaching staff, including offensive coordinator Casey Woods, knows the goals of the Mustangs are still available to them. To accomplish winning a conference championship, they’ll have to circle the wagons and beat Navy.

“I think coach (Rhett) Lashlee summarized it pretty well earlier this week. We are disappointed, but not discouraged,” Woods said on Monday. “I think all of those goals that we talked about in the begging of fall camp are still out in front of us, and certainly it starts with Navy.”

On this edition of the On The Pony Express Podcast, Billy Embody breaks down the SMU-Navy game and reveals his predictions for the latest AAC matchup for the Mustangs.

SMU needs disciplined effort against Navy

SMU defensive coordinator Scott Symons knows Navy is going to try to lull the Mustangs to sleep. There needs to be laser focus on playing fundamentally sound football on Friday.

“I mean you just have to be sound fundamentally against it,” Symons said on Monday. “It takes a lot to absorb what they do. We just need to make sure that we’re prepared and know what we are doing, and make sure we do it at a high level. At the end of the day for us, it is going to come down to playing with our fundamentals, and discipline.”

“This week is the ultimate test as far as fundamentals and technique are concerned. Right now we’re just focused on where we’re at, and getting better,” he added.
