SMU defensive end Trevion Sneed will enter the NCAA Transfer Portal on Monday, a source told On3. The former Mineola (Tex.) standout played in nine career games for the Mustangs and will have three years of eligibility remaining.

UPDATE: Sneed announced he is entering the NCAA Transfer Portal.

“First off I would like to say thank god,” Sneed said in his tweet. “Also thank the coach that recruited me and gave me the opportunity to make something out of myself. Thank you to all the people who stood by me through it. That being said I would like to announce I will be entering the transfer portal.”

Sneed, a 6-2, 242-pound defensive end who began his career as a linebacker, finished with one tackle for his career, coming against Houston this season.

As a senior, he registered 144 tackles, including 11 for loss and three sacks as a senior. Offensively, he had 337 carries for 3,082 yards and 36 touchdowns as he was the named first-team all-district before coming to SMU.

According to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, Sneed ranked as the No. 101 running back nationally and No. 198 overall prospect in Texas.

Transfer portal background information

The NCAA transfer portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.

Once a player’s name shows up in the portal, other schools can contact the player. Players can change their minds at any point and withdraw from the portal. However, once a player enters the portal, the current scholarship no longer has to be honored. In other words, if a player enters the portal but decides to stay, the school is not obligated to provide a scholarship anymore.

The database is a normal database, sortable by a variety of topics, including (of course) sport and name. A player’s individual entry includes basic details such as contact info, whether the player was on scholarship and whether the player is transferring as a graduate student.

A player can ask that a “do not contact” tag be placed on the report. In those instances, the players don’t want to be  contacted by schools unless they’ve initiated the communication.
