College Station (Tex.) A&M Consolidated wide receiver Wesley Greaves announced his commitment to SMU on Wednesday, becoming the third pledge for the Mustangs in the 2023 class.

Last weekend, Greaves was at SMU for an unofficial visit. His visit blew him away and he knew it was time to shut down his recruitment.

“They have everything I was looking for. I had no plan to commit going in to my visit, but after I got home and really thought about it, SMU checked all my boxes,” Wesley Greaves told On The Pony Express. “One of the biggest things is that it’s close to home so my parents will be able to come watch me play. I also really believe in what coach Lashlee and his staff are building.

“The vibe from the time I stepped on campus was something I had never felt before and I knew it was time to commit!”

Greaves joins Dallas (Tex.) South Oak Cliff wide receiver Randy Reece and Lucas (Tex.) Lovejoy wide receiver Jaxson Lavender in the 2023 recruiting class. Reece jumped on board on Sunday while Lavender’s been a long-time SMU pledge.

SMU sees Wesley Greaves as a big-play threat

SMU wide receivers coach Rob Likens sees the 6-1, 185-pound prospect as a perfect for the offense. Greaves said being able to go deep while also getting involved in the short passing game was impressive.

“Coach Likens told me, ‘I’m his guy,’ and he really believes in me,” Greaves said. He told me that my speed and size would be a perfect fit at the outside receiver position. Whenever I got to watch their practice Friday night, I got the feeling and started imagining myself playing at SMU.

“Its a lot like my offense at A&M Consolidated. They involve the outside guys on a lot of go balls, but they also mix it up and the outside guys can run short concepts as well. I really liked what I got to see.”

Now Greaves will turn his attention to recruiting for the Mustangs. He’s already been in contact with future Mustangs and a past SMU player he has a connection with.

“One of my good friends Bruce Mitchell for sure,” Wesley Greaves said of who he wants to recruit. “We have talked about playing together in college and he really likes what he saw on his visit. He told me he could see him self playing at SMU.

“I’ve talked with Randy Reece and Kevin Henry-Jennings and they are excited to have me join the team. My cousin Trevor Denbow played for SMU and gave me great advice about making my decision.”

Greaves plans to enroll early at SMU. He’s looking to build off a junior year that saw him catch 36 balls for 714 yards and eight touchdowns, good for 19.8 yards per catch.
