South Carolina is about to have its new tight ends coach.

The Gamecocks are expected to hire former New York Giants offensive assistant and Alabama director of player personnel Jody Wright to coach the position.

On3’s Matt Zenitz officially went on record with the news on Monday morning and that info matches what Gamecock Central has been hearing as well. On Sunday night, GC reported that all of the buzz pointed towards Wright as the hire.

A board of trustees meeting is currently scheduled for Feb. 18.

Wright will replace former tight ends coach Erik Kimrey, who spent one season at South Carolina in the same role.

News broke last week that Kimrey was leaving South Carolina to head back to the high school ranks. The Baylor School, a highly regarded private school in Chattanooga, Tn., announced the next day that Kimrey would lead their program.

Wright spent the last two seasons with the Giants, one as an offensive assistant and the other as a defensive assistant, after spending 2019 as Special Assistant to the Head Coach with the Browns.

Prior to that, Wright spent 2018 as UAB’s offensive line coach and assistant head coach after three seasons as Director of Player Personnel for Nick Saban at Alabama. That was a bit of a return to home for Wright who spent 2010 as the Tide’s offensive graduate assistant and 2011 and 2012 as an offensive analyst.

The Jacksonville State graduate’s time in Alabama sandwiched a year at UAB as assistant head coach and running backs coach in 2014.

Prior to Wright’s Alabama stops, he spent five seasons at various roles at Mississippi State where he crossed paths with South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer and former Gamecock defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson, who gave Wright his first job.

A graduate of Pickens Academy in Carrollton, Ala., Wright played for his father, Lynn, in high school. He was named an All-State running back during his final two seasons.

When Wright officially becomes South Carolina’s new tight ends coach, he’ll be the second on-field assistant hire for Beamer this offseason. The Gamecocks’ head coach also went the NFL route to hire Sterling Lucas to replace Mike Peterson as South Carolina’s ends/EDGEs coach.
