WeAreSC On3 is a daily three-point briefing recapping news and notes surrounding USC Athletics. Today, we take a look at the Preseason Pac 12 Poll being released, USC reaching out to former Wisconsin head coach Barry Alvarez, and Matt Keating officially signing with the Yankees.

Preseason Pac 12 Poll

Ahead of Pac 12 Media Day today, the Preseason Pac 12 Poll was released yesterday afternoon. The media picked USC to finish third in the conference, behind defending champion Utah and Oregon.

This year for the first time, the Pac 12 standings will be determined by a simple one-through-twelve format. Previously, the conference consisted of two divisions, with the division winners squaring off in the Pac 12 Championship Game. This year, the title game will simply feature the two teams with the best conference records.

Calling Barry Alvarez

With USC set to join the Big Ten in 2024, the Trojans could certainly benefit from someone with experience in the conference in helping to ease with the transition. And fortunately, it seems as though USC Athletic Director Mike Bohn found just that in legendary Wisconsin head coach Barry Alvarez.

ā€œI have been contacted by Southern Cal to go out and visit with them, with their staffs,ā€ Alvarez said at Big Ten Media Days. ā€œMike Bohn is a friend of mine, asked me if I’d come out and talk to them about the Big Ten and competing in the Big Ten.ā€

ā€œAnd he wanted me to do it like this week. And I said, I was too busy. But I’m going to be out there watching my grandson play in LA, in October, and I told him, I’d stay a couple days and, and he could use me however we wanted.ā€

Alvarez served as Wisconsinā€˜s head coach from 1990-2005. During that time, he transformed the Badgers from a largely irrelevant program into an annual Big Ten title contender. Following his retirement from coaching, he served as Wisconsin’s Athletic Director until 2021.

Keating Signs With Yankees

Last week, four USC Baseball players heard their names called in the MLB Draft. Yesterday, pitcher Matt Keating became the first one to sign, when he inked his deal with the New York Yankees.

After spending 2021 at a junior college, Keating served as USC’s closer in his lone season with the Trojans. Earlier this offseason, Keating entered the NCAA Transfer Portal and committed to North Carolina. Having signed a professional contract, however, Keating will now instead begin his professional career in the Yankees farm system.
