Really surprised there hasn’t been more commentary here about the event. A few things caught my eye.
The new BE Commissioner saying that the league will not follow the P4 football leagues related to eligibility issues. He said the BE will wait until the off season (next Spring) when hopefully things have settled down one way or the other before laying out its approach to eligibility, ie, overseas pros, guys who have signed some level of pro contract, etc. He added that because the BE doesn’t have football, the league has more time to figure things out.
Holloway was really good in his time at the mic and as reported in Daily Dose of Hoops. Zagora had a good article also. He’s confident but recognizes some things still have to be worked out. He likes his big guys and praised Kabba. Maybe there’s more there than we think. He’s really relying on Wilcher, Anderson and Fisher (hopefully) due to their experience in the league.
Danny Hurley— “we wait until guys declare for the portal before we recruit them unlike other coaches who recruit guys into the portal as has happened to Seton Hall.” A bit self serving by Danny but we certainly know who he was referring to in the second part of that quote. Those two really don’t like each other.
The expectation is for at least five teams in the NCAAT with a goal of six.
The commissioner really emphasized monetizing the BE. Private equity? Val was a good administrator which was needed in the early years to get the foundation laid. She did some good things with the early media deal, locking up MSG and getting UCONN back. But this guy seems more focused on what the new environment requires.
Other insights?
