Wait until they open that new cinema complex. There's a reason every theater closed-- the parking lots might as well have been discount auto centers. The proximity to the wealthy Northeast Jackson area will assure the parking lot is loaded with expensive imports.

Was just wondering yesterday afternoon as I drove past there if/when the District project was going to get started. Good news for Jackson.

Most "wealthy Northeast Jacksoners" shop or live in Madison now.

And most Jackson apologist like to say it's not just Jackson. It could happen anywhere. Right...I suppose it could, but it doesn't. There was a car jacking in Madison a year or so ago and it was big news. Contrast that with Jackson where you have to get to 127 in a short time period to even hit print...

Maybe...But I know several that still get all they need at McDade's and..

..Highland Village. Hell, a trip to Kroger is about as far north as my in-laws ever go. And there's a reason Whole Foods is setting up where they are.

Jackson isnt safe but "if we really love Jackson, we need to trust Jackson to make its own decisions. We need to give up on the idea of keeping it "safe," and have faith in the fundamental goodness of the people of this city."

http://www.jacksonfreepress.com/news/2013/may/15/loving-jackson/

The money quote...

And now, with Chokwe Lumumba, we have the opportunity to elect a radical black intellectual who is completely committed to going a step further and building a self-sustaining city economy--not a "safe" economy that returns control of the city to suburban developers and their allies in the Legislature, but a good economy that trusts our supermajority-black community with control over its own money, property and culture.

Move along. Nothing else to see here.

Don't worry. When Lumumba is elected, everything in Jackson is going to be great again. The people that fled to Madison, Ridgeland, Brandon, Clinton, etc., will return to Jackson and it will become a thriving metropolis.

I'm on the coast, but saw the "complex" plans on the news. I didn't realize every cinema in Jackson had closed--all of them? When I lived in Jackson in the '90s, the "Northeasterners" seemed to rule the city. The last time I visited, you needed a Humvee or tracked vehicle to navigate over the streets in NE Jackson. To me, the roads were better in the heart of the city than the Eastover area. So everyone is moving to the 'burbs now?

Hello and welcome to the day after you moved. Probably mid-early 90's.

I think Jackson's last movie theater was Ellis Isle. I went there circa 1988.

I think the last one was in the strip mall just north of Old Canton Rd. on the frontage road. Think that one closed around 2000.

Very good-- 1993--you nailed it. The DeVille (and probably a couple of others) was still open and played "Rocky Horror Picture Show" every Saturday at around midnight.

The cinemas in Jackson were the older style large single theater (the DeVille Plaza) or smaller one or two screen theathers (Meadowbrook). Those closed due to the simple end of their life span. The first larger theater that was built was at Northpark and its probably nearing the end of its lifespan as well.

Lots of them still live in Northeast Jackson...

especially many of the very wealthy ones, and many of them shop in Ridgeland or Flowood, and although I doubt they get as far as Madison as often, I'm sure that some of them occassionally shop in Madison as well. There is still a healthy number of people moving in to Northeast Jackson as well.

Amazing. I remember going downtown to the Lamar and Paramount for movies and I'm not even 50.

Direct correlation with Jackson being the Nation's laziest city...

Why would criminals walk or run when they can steal your car while you're in it?
