Using the numbers in CBS Sports’ Tom Fornelli article the conclusion doesn’t wash.
The average margin of victory in the BCS and the current playoff championship game is almost identical.
What’s the problem?
Well, take March Madness as an example.
The brainchild of Ohio State’s Harold Olsen in 1939 began with 8 teams, expanded to 16 in 1951, then to 32 in 1975 and finally to 64 in 1982 – with 32 Division 1 conference champs getting automatic bids -- and later 4 play-in teams were added.
Adding teams to the playoffs made it exponentially better and the best college sports tournament in America!
A free-for-all is exceedingly more interesting than only 2 teams settling the national title. The more the merrier and it lets players settle it on the field rather than a comittee deciding how many teams are losers without playing.
The writer goes in the wrong direction. EVERY Power-5 conference champ should be in the National Football Playoffs, which kinda would imitate the BCS. That way, polls by coaches and writers could only manipulate 3 teams if there’s an 8-team playoff.
Manipulators currently with power would hate it, but fans would love it!
It's time to consider contracting the College Football Playoff back to just two teams - CBSSports.com
