  3. West Stokes -2A
  4. Surry Central -2A or Wilkes Central

I hope they don't go with a split 1A/2A type NW conference. Any thoughts on another way of
realignment and non-conference schedule or changes in the non-conference teams.

Often thought they should but being 10 miles away and a county school it draws a good gate and I can not remember Mt.Airy, N.Surry E.Surry and Surry Central not all play each other and that is 40 years or longer. N.Surry is maybe 3 miles away and Surry Central & E.Surry are 10 miles away. Probably a gate thing. But that would be a good replacement for Surry Central and probably as good a gate. Surry Central won the conference at least once ,1976 I think and got beat in the first round by NE Guilford or Western Guilford or some Guilford school anyway. That may have been the only time except this year that they beat Mount Airy and it was close like a field goal or a touch down.

The Surry Central game don't bring that big of a gate, When you look at all the free gate passes. It's all about concessions.

I like the old NW 1A with Alleghany, East Surry, East Wilkes, Elkin, Mount Airy, Starmount, North Stokes, and South Stokes.

Central's played all of the main Surry county teams pretty much since 1966. We were their first game and they played East 3rd in 1961 but they started playing MA in 1966. There has been times where they didn't play the main county teams though. They played MA in 1966 and 67 but dropped them until 1971 when they joined the Northwest, and they didn't play us from 1987-1990.

Central's beat MA 4 times 1976, 1977, 1998, and this year. 1976 won them the Northwest conference and 1977 helped us to win it that season. They got Western Guilford in the first round of the 76 playoffs and Western handled them easily.

Thanks Slasher , I remembered 1976 and it was a Guilford team close to Guilford College as I remember. First and only time I had been to that school. Seems like you go that way going to Cardinal Country Club. But I did not remember the 1977 or 1998 loses.

after seeing Atkins and Walkertown with 2A numbers, the Bears may be staying put with those other WS area schools (BM and Prep)....along with North/South Stokes and add ES, that may be our new conference in '17....but that's just me and a pencil figuring....(the problem is that those 2 schools have no where to go and state is running from split leagues)

There are a lot of factors that will go into the decision making process. There's already a split conference with the MVC - would they want to continue with it or move to 1A and 2A conferences? Would the NW1A schools (and 2A schools from the WPAC) like to go back to the previous NW1A/2A split conference? What do you do with North Rowan (who is likely head back down to 1A)?

I know most of the MA and ES folks would rather move back to a 1A conference with the more western teams (Starmount, Elkin, Alleghany, E.Wilkes). That would leave the more "eastern" 1A schools like Prep, Bishop, North Rowan, to go with N.Stokes and South Stokes. The gate revenue would be much greater for MA and ES. Unfortunately, I don't think the state would create a small 5 team conference like that. The more likely outcome is regurgitated NW1A that swaps S.Stokes and N.Rowan in for Atkins and Walkertown (who will move to 2A and probably join with the current WPAC schools).

A dream scenario would see the old NW1A reemerge with Starmount, Elkin, E.Wilkes, Alleghany, Mt.Airy, E.Surry, S.Stokes, and N.Stokes. Let the MVC and WPAC 2A's merge to have W.Central, Ashe, W.Wilkes, N.Wilkes, Forbush, S.Central, N.Surry, and maybe W.Stokes. Then create a new Metro 1A/2A with WS Prep, Bishop, Atkins, Walkertown, Carver, maybe N.Rowan and possibly W.Stokes (although they'd probably prefer the MVC/WPAC merge). I guess we'll find out soon enough.

North Rowan? Why would they want to be put up here with us lol. I see them going back to Albemarle and West Montgomery's conference to replace East Montgomery since they have close to 2A numbers.

Really things would be perfect if they go back to the pre 2013 conferences but people complaining about it will never allow it to be sadly.

NWWatchdog your realignment is solid. Let me give my few cents:

-West Stokes wouldn't like the MVAC due to the travel times, plus they aren't natural rivals with anyone besides us the bush and SC. It would take them 2 hrs to get to Ashe. That's a good haul. I see them being happier with the Forsyth and Stokes schools.

-Due to the extreme situation in regards to Forsyth and the lack of other 2A/1A clubs in the county to make a sole Forsyth 2A or 1A conference they would have no other choice but to put them in a split if they want them to stay together in one gathering. Really it would be perfect if they make it a split adding the Stokes schools with the lower Forsyth teams and call it the Metro 2A/1A. South can compete with the Atkins/Bishop/N Stokes's of the world and West can face Carver, Walkertown, and Prep (if they get good here in a few years,) every season. Win/Win.for both counties in both competition and gate. Each team will have 4 non conference games instead of the 6 the WPAC has now.

-The MVAC and the Northwest will be mirror images of themselves in the late 90's in terms to setups and I'm sure everyone involved wouldn't mind that. MA and East will play their 1A counterparts again in Elkin/Starmount/E Wilkes and us, Forbush, and Central can play our Wilkes friends and we can take Ashe off the non con list. The Northwest will have 6 non conference games, and the MVAC will have 5.

Really what it will come down to is if the state is willing to think for the best of all of the schools this time. In 2012 they could have cared less about us and our opinions as a whole and we were stuck. This time maybe they are less foolish and will be willing to think on the big picture. I agree with Bareman let's hope the state doens't stay with the current set up

Atkins and Walkertown are up the creek when you look at their potential destinations.

You have:

A. Both get placed in the WPAC. Takes a non conference away from the current set up if it stays the way it's been since 2013. Conference quality doesn't really improve either. Atkins will take South's place as the doormat and won't do anything any good.

B. Both are placed in the orginal PAC with HP Andrews and compay. Atkins will be hammered like they were before joining the NW.

C. That 2A/1A league I proposed. Atkins could compete with the NW schools and South Stokes.

North Rowan would probably prefer to go towards the Montgomery schools...of course, the NW schools preferred not having to play Atkins and WS Prep (and we all know the state doesn't really care about school preference). I can only see North Rowan being shipped north in a couple of scenarios. Realistically, the NW1A will probably be stuck with WS Prep, Bishop, S.Stokes, N.Stokes, MA, E.Surry.

If this conference did happen:
  1. Alleghany
  2. East Surry
  3. East Wilkes- building a winning tradition and future looks good
  4. Elkin
  5. Mount Airy-solid program with winning tradition
  6. Starmount-solid program with winning tradition
I would like to see our non conference schedule be:

Thomasville- athletes and tradition
West Stokes- solid program with winning tradition
Wilkes Central- solid program in recent years
North Surry- In County Game
Surry Central- In County Game
Walkertown- athletes and will be well coached

Pretty doggone good schedule there. I believe in playing a tough non conference schedule against teams that have tradition and field winning programs most years. There may be a few loses along the way but if it prepares you for your conference schedule and the playoffs isn't that what really matters? Plus all these teams would bring good crowds and a good atmosphere. Guess we can wish but my gut tells me we will end up being with atkins, bishop, north stokes, and south stokes.

I posted this Nov. 1st as the 2017 Bear Realignment As I Would like To See it . As it is looking the conference part is looking good to happen for sure. Got it from a good source/friend a few days after posting this that he was suggesting the same thing as he has some voice in it.
