On account of World War II, and not a global pandemic, the 1943 season was one of staggered starts and conference standings that appeared rather uneven.
Seventy-seven years later, with preseason camps scheduled to get underway in less than three months, the discussion of whether students will be able to return to campus for the fall semester is one that has been heating up as summer nears.
The teams’ rosters featured active duty military personnel, many of whom were past and present college football players assigned to the respective bases.
The opening week of the season consisted of five games, only one of which had two colleges (Yale defeated Muhlenberg) play against each other. Three of the other games pitted a school against a military base and one featured a pair of military installations.
Most teams did not kick off the season until the third week of action and some not until the fourth. North Carolina, for example, played its first game the same day Yale played its fourth.
