Tough one. Ranger pitched great for 7 innings. Alas, he was looking a little tired in the 7th, and was sent out in the 8th, where he gave up a solo HR. The real problem was the Fightin's offense, which was shut out.

1-0, Astros, in G1 of the series.

The decisions facing this team are massive. You could easily say that there is a decision for every player on the roster.

Contract Decisions - JT, Schwarber, Ranger

Player Decisions - Are you moving forward with Bohm, Stott, and Marsh? All of them, some of them, none of them?

Position Decisions- Turner and Harper - would they move if the team can be improved?

Farm Decisions- Would you trade Miller, Crawford, Painter, Abel, Tait?

Two names that are interesting - Kyle Tucker and Bo Bichette. Would Turner move to the OF to accommodate Bichette? Tucker is a guy that has been on their radar for years. Could you run Nick out for his final year and have an OF of Tucker, Crawford, and Nick. Would you rather trade Nick in the off season and go Tucker, Crawford, and Marsh.

What is your appetite for trading farm talent. I would assume Painter would not be available, would anyone else not be available?

Would you consider trading Nola to keep Ranger beyond this year? How much of Nola’s salary would you absorb?

What do you trade for pen help this year? Who can you sign for next year?

Dombrowski has massive decisions to make.

World trade Nola over Ranger in a second but I think they painted themselves into a corner with Nola’s contract.

Top of the rotation pitching is nearly impossible to acquire. Before this year, Nola was a perennial 200 IP contender. Those guys dont grow on trees. You would need for Nola to come back and pitch better, so that you could point to his injury as a one off. His contract isnt outrageous so I think you’d get interest if you dangled the carrot of some salary subsidy. You’d get a better asset back depending on how much salary you would eat.

Transition Nola to the pen. Rojas, bye bye; keep Marsh; keep Stott; Bohm bye bye; resign Schwarber; try to keep Ranger and package some prospects for a starting left fielder/3rd baseman. Try Nick at first Harper back to right field. JT bye bye.

Playing Marsh against the lefty was the ultimate display of no confidence in Rojas. And Marsh came through with a couple hits. Rojas will be gone by the end of July, if not before. At this point he's an unproductive chasm in the active roster.

Crazy series.
30 hits and only 5 runs between the two teams.

Terrible cluster luck for both

Great pitching by the Fightins, and mostly excellent defense. Alas, little mistakes in pitching and on D, and a lack of sustained hitting, doomed them in an interesting series with the Astros.

2-1, Astros, in G3 of the series.

It's baseball. Every fan thinks their team is a roller coaster. The Mets just went on a 2-10 streak. The Yankees just went 3 straight games without scoring a run.
You are going to drive yourself nuts if you live and die by every game/series.

I get the “innings” point I really do

But innings alone doesn’t make one a good pitcher - I think Nola has been an average pitcher pretty much his whole career

I understand and don’t completely disagree. He has alternated really good seasons with very average seasons throughout his career. Maybe his durability and reliability has put undue mileage on him. I do know that for a 10 year period that no pitcher has logged more innings.

I’ve seen just about every Spring Training start he’s made and then obviously watched most of his regular season starts. What has stood out most is that his velo seems a bit lower and he no longer seems to have all three pitches (fastball, change, and knuckle curve) under command.

Maybe the Phillies got caught out on this one. If this year was Nola’s contract year in conjunction with how Ranger looks, we might be having a very different outcome. The Phillies have to make the decision on who they think is better over the next 2-4 years.
