You’re blind. That’s been a takedown in college wrestling for 50 years until those idiots decided to reinterpret reaction time this year to mean 2 full seconds so they never have to make a tough call because they’re cowards who are bad at their job.

You are right that was consistent with how’s that’s been called this year. It’s been called wrong all year and it’s killing the ******* sport. Makes me sick.

What wasn’t consistent was the ref letting Haines walk straight out of bounds no call and then calling McEnelly on the same thing in the next match (if you want evidence of inconsistency).
I actually agree with you on Haines. I was surprised he didn’t get hit for that.

There was only a brief period when they took reaction time away. For the vast majority of wrestling’s history reaction time has been in the rulebook and generally defined the same (loosely as “not instantaneous”).

This used to be widely interpreted as a very very short time, usually a split second to allow some kind of reaction. Now it’s interpreted as “as long as the defender is still moving he has reaction time.” It’s a radical departure from the tradition of the sport.

The first possible takedown in the sequence (Welsh hand down) is an example of a tough call historically in wrestling. Calling reaction time there is 100% defensible. The new part is saying that getting returned to the mat with a second left on the clock is not enough time for reaction time. That was a no doubt takedown for my entire life up until this year.

And it’s not always consistent this year either. Watch this:

This is correctly called imo but there’s less reaction time here than what Welsh got in the final. One of these calls has to be wrong.

The only thing I see is for some reason if it is at the out of bounds they call it a takedown even though it should not matter. It is wildly terrible how it changes from ref to ref. I agree that the old way was better, but this year that hasn't been a takedown very often. I have hated this "reaction time" stuff all year. We need to go back to the contact rule they tried for awhile. Error on behalf of the scoring.

285 Final- #1 Taye Ghadiali (MI) vs. #2 AJ Ferrari (NEB)

Period 1:
There's no Cole, so here's the 285 final. Not much action through the first couple minutes. Lots of circling, tying up & hand fighting so far. AJ shoots, but can't get there. Ghadiali counters, but no luck. Back to tying up & circling. AJ drops to a leg, but Ghadiali fights him off. Tying up & pushing to end the period. 0-0

Period 2:
Ghadiali takes down. He works to a quadpod, but AJ brings him back to the Resilite. Ghadiali works back to a quadpod, but not for long. AJ gets Ghadiali bellied out on the edge. Out of bounds & restart. Ghadiali is still down. AJ rides Ghadiali around the mat. Ghadiali rolls, but can't get away. Michigan throws the brick & is looking for locked hands.

Challenge lost, the score stays 0-0. Back to action. Ghadiali is still down. Ghadiali sits out, but AJ stays with him. Ghadiali gets to his feet, but AJ drops to a leg & drives him out, restart. Ghadiali is still down. AJ goes over 1-min of RT. Ghadiali works to his feet, but AJ trips him back to the Resilite. Ghadiali turns, but AJ gets a leg. AJ gets a stall call, then brings Ghadiali back down to the mat. Ghadiali gets a stall warning too. AJ rides out the period. 0-0, AJ +1:57 RT (AJ lost 3-sec of RT when he got hit for stalling)

Period 3:
AJ takes down. He works to his feet & gets the escape, 1-0. AJ still has 1:46 in riding time. Collar ties & pushing in the center. AJ shoots & gets to a leg. Ghadiali counters. AJ re-counters & they go out of bounds, neutral restart. Ghadiali pushes forward taking AJ to the edge. AJ circles around the edge & drops to his knees. AJ grabs a leg. Ghadiali is trying to work behind & then he does. Ghadiali gets the TD, 3-1. Wow! Great effort by Ghadiali. AJ gets another stall call, point Ghadiali, 4-1. AJ is down injured now. Manning doesn't look happy.

Back to action. AJ has riding time locked up, 18-sec left. Ghadiali takes down on the restart. AJ concedes the escape, 5-1, neutral start. AJ shoots, but Ghadiali blocks him off. AJ keeps coming, but can't find an opening & time expires. AJ adds a RT point, 5-2, but that doesn't matter. What a comeback by Ghadiali!

Taye Ghadiali DEC AJ Ferrari 5-2

Ghadiali takes 1st Place!
NCAA HWT seed preview:
1 - Bastida
2 - Trumble
3 - Ghadiali
4 - Feldman - H2H 2-1 over Ferrari
5 - Ferrari - H2H over Doucet
6 - Doucet
7 - Taylor - EIWA champ

(EDIT: Ferrari will probably get the 4 over Feldman. I forgot about the H2H points split for multiple matches. Feldman's advantage there will be overcome by coaches' rank + conference placement + Win % + RPI. Feldman or Doucet for the 5 gets complicated without doing the math.)

After that, guessing Carroll and Kueter in either order. Hard to say for certain until we see the coaches poll. Mirasola 10.

We might see this again in the NCAA semis:

Welsh cited reaction time specifically as why he thought it was not a takedown, FWIW. His take, obviously, and didn't get Minnys, but just passing along what I heard.

Who cares? If he wants to be a coward and ban me he can do it.

Most of you should know I’m not here to troll. I was defending Haines as a deserving winner 15 minutes ago on HR. This is much bigger than PSU. The sport is in crisis.
I think crisis is a strong word. This year especially there has been a lot of inconsistency with take down calls. Ncaa needs to get together with the wrestling powers that be and make some changes if needed. This happens almost every year with something. The sport is evolving. Calling for every ref to be fired is just a little over the top in my opinion

What happens if you take away Welsh’s arm there? Does he fall on his face or somehow levitate without the SUPPORT of his hand?

The only way he was able to react was because he had that support point down.
He immediately jumped up he even put both hands up to show the refs

It’s just that he seemed to have the same game plan as the first time they met which resulted in a pretty unlikely win. Not sure why there wouldn’t have been a different game plan ready for this time? Look at the PJ/Taylor difference since the 1st match.

I certainly don’t think he’s outmatched. But I’m absolutely not confident he’ll win if they meet again.

I've watched the previous matches and one thing is clear. Neither one is the same wrestler they both have improved which shows in the way they wrestle.
