92kg QF- Josh Barr vs. Mohammadmobin Gholamali Azimi (IRI)

Period 1:
Here we go! Circling, hand fighting & brief tie ups. Barr with some snaps. They tie up & Barr drops to a knee, then they break. Tying up again. Barr gets hit with a passivity warning. He shoots & gets a leg. He's on the edge with the leg elevated & takes Azimi out, 1-0. Back to neutral. Tying up & fighting for position. Azimi gets a passivity warning. Back to tying up. Barr shoots, but Azimi circles away. Azimi gets double unders & drives Barr out, 1-1, adv Azimi. Tying up & hand fighting. Azimi looks for an underhook, but Barr fights him off. Stoppage for finger warning. Barr with some fakes. Azimi presses forward & almost takes Barr out, but Barr fights him off & circles back in. Azimi has Barr near the edge again, but Barr circles back to center. More circling & hand fighting as the period ends. 1-1, adv. Azimi

Period 2:
Back to action. Barr tries an underhook, but no luck. Azimi presses forward & Barr hits a slick single & comes behind for the TD, 3-1. No turns, back to neutral. Barr picks up his pace & presses forward off the whistle. He hits a throw by & comes behind for the TD, 5-1. Azimi is challenging something...

Challenge won, score changed back to 3-1 Barr. I don't know why that was overturned. Back to action. Azimi pushes forward. Barr circles back to center. Azimi hits a throw by & comes behind for the TD, 3-3. He adds a turn, 5-3 & Barr waves for time or something, but action keeps going. Azimi hits another turn, 7-3. Barr is trying to defend, but is clearly limited. Azimi adds 3 more turns for the 13-3 tech. Barr is down on the mat injured & the trainers are out now. Hopefully he's all right. They've got the cold spray out & they're spraying around his upper ribs on the left side. Josh is up walking around, but is walking gingerly. Hopefully, it's just a minor tweak.

Mohammadmobin Gholamali Azimi TECH Josh Barr 13-3 (4:31)

Is limping after a rib injury typical? I wanted to post about how Barr was complaining too much mid match but now I would feel not so nice to do so. Hopefully this is a quick recovery, or just pain with no true damage.

That's it for this session. Mesenbrink advances to the semis. He'll be the first match on Mat C in the next session.

I think officials deciding between "slip" and "tried something risky that didn't work" should defer to the latter more often. Barr wasn't holding the center during that match so he probably loses anyway but if he wins that challenge he's up 6-1 and could've held on.
agree. I like how he stayed aggressive looking for another td... sort of bit him....but I think he wasn't going to win a 3-x bout

I like slip calls in greco, but don’t get it in freestyle.

74kg R1- Mitchell Mesenbrink vs. Aliaksandr Hulnik

Period 1:
Aoyagi won by techfall in the previous match. Casey is in the corner for Mitch. Here we go! Tying up & hand fighting. Mesenbrink shoots immediately & gets to a low leg. Hulnik counters & tries to flip Mesenbrink over. They keep scrambling & Mesenbrink comes out on top, but Hulnik injures his knee, so we're stopped for injury time. Mesenbrink gets awarded the takesown, 2-0.

Restart in par terre. Mesenbrink adds a turn, 4-0. Back to neutral. Mesenbrink works a front headlock. Hulnik drives forward, there's a funky scramble & Hulnik gets an exposure, 4-2. They work back to their feet. Mesenbrink shoots, gets to the low leg again & then finishes the TD, 6-2. No turns, back to neutral. Tying up & hand fighting. Mesenbrink warned for fingers. Circling, faking & head tapping now. Mesenbrink shoots. Hulnik sprawls back & it's a stalemate. Neutral restart. Circling, tying up & hand fighting. Mesenbrink drags, then drops to a leg & drives Hulnik out, 8-2. Back to neutral. Circling & hand fighting. Hulnik shoots, but can't get there. Mesenbrink presses forward, snaps, then comes behind for the TD, 10-2. He rolls Hulnik to his back & gets the FALL! The buzzsaw is back! Mesenbrink does more work in a couple minutes than most wrestlers do in an entire match! He's going to be a lot of fun to watch in college this year!

Mitchell Mesenbrink FALL Aliaksandr Hulnik 12-2 (2:11)

Josh Barr has a first round bye, so I think that's it for a while.
Great PBP. Thank you

I get the point of the rule. But Greco needs to encourage a lot more risk-taking than freestyle generally needs. I just don’t think Freestyle needs it.
I agree. More often than not, it comes from being under attack and last-ditch efforts to ****** counter. That isn’t the spirit of the rule at all. Much easier to enforce in Greco, as well.

I don’t mind it in free for 4-point attacks because we should incentivize them and you already can’t slip to your back anyway.

hey, we got two medals in Greco. It’s a good week.

That was a high level adjustment by Ayogi to not give up the exposure on the attack.

MM tries to get the exposure - realizes that Aoyago isn't going to give it up - LOOKS AT THE CLOCK, and then he lifts his leg again and pauses it there. Aoyagi relaxed for just a sec and MM limp legged out to circle the front and get the TD. Wow.
