Disagree, that's football, you would have been within the kickers range and misses happen but to not give the kicker the chance to 17 up is completely unacceptable because you have no situational awareness!

Lebby recruited the quarterback that can’t make the throws or avoid pressure. Ultimately it’s on him either way.
Yes I feel more confident with the the kick than I do about a coach who doesn't have situational awareness and didn't do what the obvious thing to do was.
To have Fat Albert drop back in coverage and grab your pass... Plus all the multitude of mistakes prior to that point. You have to try really hard to find that many creative ways to lose.
Not to mention, booth was gashing them regularly on the ground. He would have picked up yards on a designed run play.
Exactly, the play before that . Why would you run it up the middle to place the ball in the middle for the kicker, use your last timeout , and then do that?
He hasn’t been great lately. I thought we needed 10 more yards. That last play call, had it been executed, was wide open. We might have got a TD.
The line of scrimmage was the 29 if I am not mistaken. Practically every college kicker can make a 46 yard field goal.
edit to add: I went back and looked at the replay. Line of scrimmage was indeed on the 29. Well within our kickers range.

Why were we throwing in that situation is the question. The answer is our amateur hour glorified OC Heas coach getting OJT made the wrong call.
Yet the play was wide open. It might have got a TD, it was that open. Shapen just screwed up.
True that, but we wouldnt have even been close without him. It is what it is. We were as bad as we have ever been last year…and that’s saying a heck of a lot. The improvement is actually amazing this year. We were in such. dEEP hole.
Man, you are deluding yourself. We didn't need a TD, we needed a FG. Run the ball, and maybe that breaks for a TD. But if you are gonna pass it, you make sure your QB knows he only throws that if there is NO CHANCE of it getting intercepted. You make sure your QB knows it has to be WIDE *** OPEN, and quick enough to not risk a sack, but NO MATTER WHAT throw the ball away if you must.

When you have a quarterback that you recruited that screws up as much as Shapen does, you don’t give him the opportunity to do so in the biggest moment of the game when you are in field goal range.
Look at the low level view from behind Shapen if you can find it. He didn’t see the UF guy, and the play was wide open, down the sideline, exactly as it was drawn up., for possibly a TD. The big ole guy from UF made a great play. We made what turned out to be a bad one. Hindsight is 20/20. I’ve been around the block enough to recognize it for what it was. If you want to get on the coach, those four straight QB runs would be a better target. Score there, even a FG, and it’s a different game.

You are in game-winning FG range, and you throw it over the middle? Pass could be tipped and intercepted, or could have been a perfect pass only to have our guy have it go off his hands and get intercepted.
The surest thing we had at that point was a very makable FG, with as close to zero risk as we could have hoped for. No good reason to try something more risky at that point.
He may have gotten hit throwing it. Needed to go to the fade route on an early throw. Fat guy goes right to where it's thrown though. So that was already known by the game film.

We were down by 2. Just stop. I can absolutely assure you we weren’t even trying for a TD. And if somehow we were trying to throw a 30 yard TD pass instead of centering the ball for a game winning FG, that’s about the only thing that could have made that disastrous decision even worse.
Look at the damn video. Use your own eyes. It was there and that was the direction of the pass.
