After the construction phase, the inland port terminal will probably only employee 3-5 people. 2 crane operators and someone in an office. Everytime I go by the one in Dillion SC, nobody is there, well except once. The piggy back trains will just pick up and set off there, with the operators loading cars and trailers. The job boost for that is minimal. However, after that project CSX plans to build a full-service diesel shop in Rocky Mount yard. They will have to hire some diesel machinists for that, I could see at least 7-10 per shift. With Rocky Mount being 1/2 way between New York and Florida, they would shut down other service facilities and send the locomotives to Rocky Mount (that's the railroad way, build here, close there). They recently tried to sale the line between Rocky Mount to Plymouth and over to Greenville and Kinston, but got caught putting old cross ties down and saying the track was good, the fed got wind of it and blocked the sale for a year. If you only knew what shape that track is in, with anhydrous ammonia running through town. But it must not be alot of business projected from the tire plant, or they wouldn't sale itI don't know if there is any discussion among the school board, but there seems to be some from the fans at both schools. Each side is proud of its own history and really doesn't want to see it happen. Then you need to factor in the Corning and Triangle Tire plants being built at the Kingsboro site. Projections are between 2500 and 3500 new jobs will be available by the end of 2020. I am pretty sure the school board isn't going to make any decisions on consolidation until they know what affect this will have on student populations.
This kind of growth has folks hoping for an economic rebirth. Edgecombe County lost numerous textiles after NAFTA and the county's biggest employer, Carolina Telephone was acquired by Sprint and those jobs moved to Wake Forest. Hurricane Floyd was the last straw for a lot of people that got flooded out of their homes. Watching our proud little town get punched, kicked around and discarded has been difficult. But our area does have some geographic advantages. It's located on a major, limited-access 4-lane US highway just 15 miles from I-95. CSX will be building a sizable rail cargo terminal in the area also. The new plants are an enormous investment in the area that isn't likely to be tossed aside anytime soon, so hopes are high.
