A few additional thoughts on this team - slightly wooly version.....

If Green stays healthy, he is the kind of player that keeps the chains moving all year.

Those WR quick hitters (like the one Bumphis scored on with his first TD) to Bumphis and Heavens should be dangerous all year. Simple and effective AND when combined with the inside threat of Dixon and Relf, you really have something there. This is really tough to stop if you think about it.

That formation with Green in the slot or flexing back behind the OL in an up-back position creates tons of mismatches. if you spread your LB's out to cover Bump and Green, Dixon and Relf kill you up the middle (IF we can get some decent blocking inside). Then you have the added problem of a LB on Green. If they press safeties then you go over the top. Then you always have the option of the sprint reverse to Bumphis. It is amazing how simple it gets when you have playmakers and the common sense to throw a quick slant or bubble screen to your WR.

The jury is definitely still out, but it is amazing how simple this scheme can make it for a player like Relf. Know your reads on the option, be able to throw the short pass and the bomb. That is it. No need to be hitting WRs in between the LBs and the Safetys on a intermediate/deep crossing route, just throw a ten yard strike to Bumphis and let him hit the juke button. I dont think he will have too much trouble running on SEC defenses either (by "too much trouble" I mean he can be successful, not dominate) - he apparently had big running games in all of our scrimmages. I will say this, if I am an NFL scout and I see Relf have a good year, I am bumping Tebow a few more slots down my board.

I will say it all year. Omarr and Jerious would have KILLED it in this offense.

Everyone that has been following this team should know that we could easily get blown off the field this weekend. Everyone should also know that we could beat them if we hit on all cylinders. Who knows how the matchups will play out with Mullen. Jackie's teams got up against Ole Miss and Auburn and tanked against Ark, Croom's boys played better against Bama, Ark and Auburn and struggled with Ole Miss. Everyone gets throttled by LSU. Something tells me Mullen will always have his teams up against Ole Miss, we will have to see about the rest.

"I will say this, if I am an NFL scout and I see Relf have a good year, I am bumping Tebow a few more slots down my board." Agree with simplicity and the Omarr/JRock thing but seriously. I also agree that Relf with see the majority of snaps the rest of the season, unless TLee just lights it up, Relf is too good and versatile to keep off the field.

Look, I know Tebow is good, maybe the best college QB we have ever seen, but it is the same deal with the T-Tech QBs or a June Jones QB. If you have a guy like Relf, who clearly isnt in the same galaxy as Tebow, having a productive year in this offense, it makes you wonder. That is all I am saying - and it sure isnt a novel thought - this discussion regarding Tebow has been around since he has been draft eligible.

is how our team handles the road. A really young bunch are going to have to show some grit out there and ignore the 88,000 screaming at them. We need Mullen to have our freshman play like Miami's freshman did last night. Those guys handled the pressure amazingly and played to win until the end. I don't have any prediction for this weekend except I see a game that will be decided in the fourth quarter.

I think there are serious doubts as to whether he can be a decent NFL QB. Not saying he can't be, just that there's still a real question about it.

I read this like 6 times before I figured out that you weren't saying that Relf is better than Tebow. My head came very close to exploding. Now I see your point, and it makes sense.

It should probably read something like:

If Mullen can make Relf look good in this offense, it really makes me wonder about the "mystique" of Tebow.

Same deal with Alex Smith.

For 17's sake, I am not even completely sold that Relf is better than Tyson Lee.

Tebow has proven that he can really throw the ball down field. I think that it will be a while before Relf is let loose to sling it. If he can work on his accuracy on the short inside routes he can really help out. The key will be hitting the receivers in stride.

...is he is so physically gifted and seems to be so ridiculously competitive, that I can't see him not succeeding in some fashion in the NFL. I dont know if it will be at QB, but he will succeed at some position. And honestly, I could see him becoming a good NFL passer with some practice, he just hasn't been trained to do that in college. He's just that physically gifted that I think he can basically do what he wants.

While I agree with what you said, two of those TD's Relf threw were pretty impressive. The TD Green placed over the db and were Green could catch it. The TD to Bumphis between two DB's was very good. I see Relf being a solid QB for us this year, and to think he is only a SOPH.

But IF we get Cam Newton, I think Relf will be no more than a back-up for the rest of his career. A capable back-up mind you, but unless Newton can't run and use his 240 pound body to bang people like dare I say Tim Tebow, I can't see Relf contrasting him like he does Lee. I also have to believe that Newton is a better passer.

We've been screaming for years about our inability to recruit legit high-quality QB's. What a nice, warm feeling it is to be pissing all over ourselves because they are now actually wanting to come to State.

But lets make sure we don't go crowning a JUCO transfer the starting QB (especially one that hasn't committed yet)...we all know how that can turn out.

But I get what you are saying. Same theory as my Relf/Tebow theory. The bottom line is that if the Meyer/Mullen Spread, if you want to call it that, can polish a turd like Relf, then you can imagine what it can do with a really special athlete (as it has done with Tebow - and potentially, to a lesser degree, Cam Newton). You never know, the Meyer/Mullen spread might have made a productive QB out of the aforementioned Schaeffer.

Maybe I am being a little harsh calling Relf a turd, but he certainly doesnt have the pedigree Newton has.
