Painter actually grew up an IU fan. Has talked about it a number of times. He played summer basketball with Bob Knight's son Pat and stayed with him in Bloomington sometimes during the summer. He has some great stories about his limited interactions with Bob Knight during that time. He was never recruited by Knight to IU and obviously ended up with Keady at Purdue.

I'm a Purdue fan/grad that lives in South Bend. I've heard no smoke on a Painter/ND rumor on either end of it. Purdue will pay what it takes to keep Painter. The 8 years at 3.75 talked about here isn't much more than he is currently making.

Painter is guaranteed $3.55 million for the 2022-23 season. His total base compensation will increase to $3.67 million in 2023-24 and $3.75 million in 2024-25.

Purdue added a one-time retention bonus of $450,000 if Painter remains the school's basketball coach on Sept. 1, 2024. During the 2024-25 season, Painter will earn a guaranteed $4.2 million.

There is probably some sort of bonus that he will earn this year for winning the Big Ten as well but safe to say I don't think 3.75 million is going to pull him from Purdue and if it is important to him Purdue will bump his salary up.

If Painter wanted to be the highest paid coach in the Big Ten, he has had the leverage to ask for that type of money at Purdue for many years. I think he likes to be fairly compensated but I don't think he's the type that is looking to squeeze every last dime he can get out of Purdue. Even if he did, I don't think Notre Dame cares enough about basketball to throw the type of money at him that it would take to get him to even consider that jump.

Frankly, the Texas rumors would be more concerning if he was looking for a raise but it's also important to keep in mind that he grew up in Indiana, played in the state, and has now spent close to 20 years coaching Purdue. He has established a good relationship with local high school coaches and AAU programs throughout the state. He's invested in the program and not everything he's built here can be packed up to go elsewhere with him. He's also mentioned many times how fortunate he feels to be coaching at Purdue and how the grass isn't always greener.

From the Notre Dame side, the two names I've been hearing most are the Charleston coach and the Drake coach. I've also heard the Fran rumors and some talk about an assistant with the Mavericks that lives in South Bend in the offseason.

I really don’t see painter looking elsewhere. He’s on the Gene Keady train.

ND is gonna be an interesting one. You need that guy who doesn’t care about being 3rd fiddle to football and football.

And the 3rd best basketball team in Indiana

72’s Brey as possible HC at GTown doesn’t make any sense either when the guy”retired” from ND. Brey will forever be a POS in my book for his advice to Christie about RU !

3rd at best. They will have to fight with Butler for that. About 7 or 8 years ago they were coming off back-to-back Elite 8 appearances and Purdue and IU were really struggling so they would've been the top program as recently as then. But they've missed 4 of the last 5 NCAA tournaments and were probably going to miss it in 2020 when it was cancelled.

Brey was forced to "retire". He has already said he is looking to coach somewhere else. I have heard the speculation about him and Georgetown but don't know if it's valid or not. It would seem to make sense to me. I know he's recruited alot in that area so in some ways it might work out well for him. He was never really able to tap into the Indiana talent while at Notre Dame anyway unless it was specifically in the South Bend area (Demetrius Jackson, Blake Wesley). He even missed out on Ivey whose mom obviously coaches the women's team at Notre Dame. I think that one really hurt him.
