...he got a call from Cam's dad tonight. Cam's dad said that the announcement would be on 12/31 and that they would like to impose a "gag order" until then. I think this bodes well for us for two reasons: 1) Cam's dad called Steve, who he knows is a State website guy 2) It's taking place on 12/31 which, as discussed earlier, is good for us because of Auburn's bowl situation.

Or maybe Steve is bugging the hell out of him.

I want to see if Paul or Wardlaw get a similar call.

Too risky for Steve to just put something that specific out there if he didn't talk to Cam's dad. The Christmas announcement did sound odd since Cam's dad is a preacher.

Would like to know if one of their writers got a similar call. But I would agree that if he is announcing on the 31st, that would bode a little better for us.

he supposedly wants to announce at the school that he is going to. Auburn plays in the Outback Bowl on January 1, so their entire football staff will be in Florida. Just seems like if he's announcing at the school he is going to, then the football coaches would probably be there

Well I for one would like to know if Steve is the only reporter of the 3 final schools Cam's dad is keeping posted. Also, if Cam's dad did in fact talk to an Auburn reporter, he may have told him some different information than that received by Steve.

Seems like an announcement AT the school would be an NCAA violation. I've got nothing to back that up, so I could be wrong, but I just have a hard time believing that prospective student-athletes could hold a press conference at the school they plan to attend. If so, I think we would have seen it before now.

Set up a press conference at the school he plans to attend? This just seems wierd. It's not like millions of people are going to be watching this anyway.

i believe that notion came from paul jones. paul either misheard or cecil misspoke.

you would think that if both schools are fairly even then newton would choose the school where he already knows the offense and has a relationship with the head coach. you would think anyway also, i dont think his dad visited au.

He's a January enrollee so maybe he can be on campus. Im ASSUMING he can sign the papers, enroll at State and then do the press conference. Just a wild guess though

While I somewhat agree with this, it is a common thing in present day college football. And with that being said, Mullen has coached this kid at a previous school in which he was the backup QB. I trust Dan Mullen and his decisions regarding the recruitment of Cam Newton.

and I'm just being honest here- I would choose MSU and Mullen if I already had a good relationship with him and knew what what I was getting into, and then on top of that, Mullen has developed more QB's that have gone on to the NFL than Mahlzahn, and I also think that Mullen's offense is much more compatible to transitioning to an NFL offense than Mahlzahn's. Supposedly, Newton asked Mullen about putting in some pro-style plays, and I could see Dan doing that, but I'm not sure that I could see Mahlzahn doing that since he likes to do Hurry up offense all the time. Those would be huge factors to me.

Now, I don't know how much money is getting passed under the table, and I have gone to both MSU and Auburn for football games before. And I'll be honest, I think both are pretty darn good as far as atmosphere. Auburn has more tradition and a bigger stadium for sure, but we're filling our stadium up and it's just as fun and rowdy as just about anywhere in the SEC.

Both QB situations seem to about the same as well, which also would be huge. To me, though the difference would be Mullen's history with QB's. Mahlzahn has developed who? Mullen has developed Alex Smith into a first round pick, Tebow into a Heisman winner whose production dropped off significantly after he left, and just about every QB under Mullen has been successful in college. Unless Tulsa put someone on the NFL that I'm not aware of, I think Mullen would have the edge there.

But that's just me, and I may be looking through Maroon colored glasses, but the only thing I can see as far as Auburn having any huge edge would be the proximity to home.

...wherever Ebby Cameron decides to go December 31st, he'll have already sent in his LOI before he announces. So he'll be a signee... not a recruit, when he graces someone with his presence.

What I figure this all boils down to is he was finishing up whatever "coursework" was talked about over a week ago after the semester was over. The SEC requires a math class that some other schools don't from juco's, unless I'm mistaken.

responded to you but Paul at BDJ said that Cam's father told him that the announcement would come next Tuesday or Wednesday. This was after he had made his trip to Auburn.

For the record, I think Paul called Cam's father and not the other way around.

the 31st is Thursday. It doesn't make much difference. Either way, we still have to wait until they make an announcement.

This news about cam waiting until after Christmas was 1st reported by Paul Jones at BDJ. Cam's dad broke the news about the Dec 15 date to Kyle Veazy. I don't remember who broke the 22nd news but the good thing about all this is that Cam's dad has talked to State reporters more than he has to Auburn guys. I think the main reason for this is that it's because we have been recruiting him longer than Auburn.

season with Cam, it will be expected. Cam has a better chance to be one and done at MSU than at Auburn. Cam needs to look at what happened with Jevan Sneed at Ole Miss when Nutt arrived. Jevan wasn't the 2nd coming, but he played on a good Ole Miss team his 1st year and he was being talked about as the 1st pick in the draft prior to this year. That wouldn't have happened at a bigger school. At a small school success is over amplified at the QB position. Come to MSU, Cam!

Just tell Mullen(if MSU) and let him get the word out. I would rather send a message to the team that you are just another recruit coming aboard. A press conference sends the message 'it's all about me'.

Are you freaking kidding me? This guy is not a first round quarterback. He is a good player, but he does not throw the ball with enough accuracy to be a first round pick.
Tim Tebow isn't even a surefire first round pick. If Tim Tebow isn't for sure a first rounder, there's no way Cameron Newton is.

are high school kids who are going through this for the first time. Cam Newton has already gone to a big time school and gotten in trouble and is now very limited in options. Be like other JUCO guys and just call the website guys and fax in your papers.
No matter where Newton signs, he sure as heck better light the freaking world on fire. He has definitely tried to make himself out to be a really big deal and he better back it up.

And yes (to paraphrase Ron Polk), he's kind of a big deal. I have little doubt that wherever he signs he will back it up. I just hope if he doesn't sign with us he signs with Oklahoma because I don't was us to have to play against him.

That's a bit of a stretch. He's a 5 star and rated as the #1 QB in the country on Rivals. He has offers from 6-7 Div 1 football programs. He's a pretty big deal.

Louisville?

Other than Oklahoma (and that's really as a TE), is that a "big deal" offer list? The other thing is look at the people who took a pass on him. Tennessee in particular.

Newton is an extremely talented runner who has slightly above average passing skills. Evidently these days that means he's gonna be rated the best QB in America. Course, Russell Shepard was rated that last year, and he's never going to play QB at LSU. He's an athlete.

I know most of the Auburn fans didn't even have a clue who he was even while he was visiting there. Of course interest has perked for Auburn fans now that it looks like Auburn has a very realistic shot of landing him. I would still love to have Newton and believe he could be the difference between a decent season and a great season next year but its always bothered me that even though we have the perfect setup for him (open QB spot, knows the playbook, long relationship with Mullen, everyone upbeat on the future of the program) and all that happened at the Egg Bowl that he wouldn't just go ahead and commit but rather he was insistent on shopping himself around to other programs. Certainly his right to do that but its kind of like dating a girl who likes you enough to date but she spends most of the dates you are on with her with an eye out on other eligible guys she might rather be with. Certainly NOT a comforting feeling.

that I think it's a stretch to say he only matters to us and Auburn. There are several schools that would love to have him. I agree with you that he doesn't have a ton of offers from top tier programs at this point, but being the #1 rated QB by Rivals(which is definitely no guarantee of success) still makes him a big time prospect. He was a 5 star prospect out of high school as well. I personally think the OK offer as a TE was message boardspeak more than anything else. Given Cam's situation, I don't think he'd have went to visit OK knowing that they wanted him to play TE. His comments after leaving there didn't imply anything of that sort either. I also think that what he wants/needs out of a program at this point just wasn't a match at several places, which limited some of his offers.

Ummm.. a "gag order" is used to prevent people who know something from telling everyone. Cam's dad should issue a "gag order" to his family... not to us or any Scout.com writer.... because none of us know ****.

There is no doubt in my mind that he is headed to Auburn. After getting along with all the players and taking him out 'every night" and telling him "what a difference maker he will be for us" got him, plus it's closer to home being at AU. Plus as the above statements said..... to announce the thing on New Years Eve is basically getting his name put out on National TV, a New Years Day Bowl... trying to get a jump start into next season for Auburn and their fan base. Freakin sucks!
