Addie Deal enters transfer portal

In this day and age nothing surprises me with the portal, I wish Addie would have stuck it out but it’s not to be. IMO she was given opportunities to take advantage of her time on the floor and make positive impacts, For the most part she did not, Journey was originally given even smaller chances to make a positive impact and she took advantage of almost every chance she was given and slowly her role continued to grow.

Exactly. Gotta pay dues at Iowa. It’s weird.
Not at all the same. Stremlow's TOs were forced passes ala Clark where she overestimated someone being open. It was the right idea but too optimistic. Deal's TOs were due to terrible handles and driving into multiple defenders which made her a liability any time she was on the court with the ball

I disagree, this may open up $1 million per a year. Deal does not have the quickness to be a star. She has a nice shot, she has decent court awarness, handles and quickness she does not have, and its going to be difficult for her to gain in those areas.
Way too early. That seems premature and wrong.

We will see how she does at UCLa or USC with a different coach. My guess is this evaluation will prove to be inaccurate.

lol developmental player. How the hell would anybody know with the little playing time she got.
This wasn't a development year. Why are you implying a team that ended up #2 in the B10 award playing time based on recruiting rankings and potentially sacrifice wins for her development? Do you understand the problems that would create among other players in the locker room?

This is so inaccurate and a terrible excuse for TS. You just excused someone’s turnovers and ball handling. TS could be a disaster when pressed.

TS plays hard and is a warrior. But her ceiling is considerably lower than AD.

Are you really using ball-handling and TOs "under pressure" as a criticism of Stremlow while ostensibly defending Deal? I honestly cant recall a guard with worse handles or a TO liability (of any star ranking) than what we saw from Deal

So idk how you can make that criticism of Stremlow in good faith without applying it to Deal

Just disappointing to me because I was still hoping she would develop. I guess she fell out of love with Iowa in a hurry though. I just hope Iowa does not experience ISU transfer numbers. If so, then the coach(es) could be a problem?
Heard from a parent on the team expect 1 more for sure and possibly 2. Neither one would be a surprise based on comments from this board. Neither name she mentioned was Rodriguez either

Not entirely sure anyone knows what Addie's ceiling is but we have a fairly decent idea of her floor. You also can't build a team on hope. Either way, I can't definitively say she will or won't be missed. Will in regards to one less player on an already small roster, but as a fan I just had no idea what was going to happen when she had the ball in her hands.

I swear some of you don't watch any other teams/games besides Iowa. Iowa expected an impact player. They got a development project. You have to manage your money and your roster in the portal era. As much as we wished/hoped Deal was Aubrey Galvan or Addi Mack, she didn't bring that bag with her to college.

I do hope she finds somewhere to play with less pressure to be that player, and hopefully develops into it. Would be a great portal story for her. Iowa can't wait for it to maybe happen.

But TS is a sophomore. And we’ve seen ADs best be better than TS best.

Yeah…TS should have “developed” against pressure and just handling the ball in general.

I was a Deal fan and am bummed to see her go but wish her the best. I am also a Jan supporter but I am concerned about 2 things.

#1–For a team who hangs their hat on their culture it sends a bad message to potential recruits and portal candidates

#2–I hope Jan’s offense philosophy this year was based on personnel and not for the long term. Besides Iowa’s culture, their Bluder fast paced offense appealed to many and helped make us popular to recruits and fans.

I worry about what made us the most watched program in college basketball dropping us to just another college team supported by just us loyal fans. Am I over reacting? OK, I know CC had the most to do with it but I’m worried we are going the wrong way.

Lets use objective data. Per 36 #s:
Stremlow 3.5 TOs
Deal 3.9 TOs

Now on the subjective side, Stremlows TOs were front-loaded and we saw her decision-making improve considerably through the season, especially in the last few months. I did not see any improvement by Deal. Regardless, you are forgetting Jan gave Deal an unearned starting role (over Stremlow) following McCabe's injury. She flamed out spectacularly and eventually Stremlow and others absorbed most of those min

It wasn't Jan playing favorites. Deal had every opportunity but couldn't cut it and opted to quit rather than continue developing. Stremlow improved and earned her playing time

I think this will turn out best for both parties

Deal really struggled 90% of the season and she doesn’t look like a difference maker.

Easy to find someone better in portal.

That's the problem. Jan's offense isn't going to get great guards to join Iowa.
I think Jan's offense "this" year has been geared to get the ball inside with Ava Heiden having a successfull season but you still have to have versatility at all positions. We lacked consistency on the perimeter so the plan was to get the ball to our most consistent scorer which was Heiden. We need a guard who can create off the dribble and can step outside.

This was to be expected, but sad none the least. I have a good friend, a former WBB player who is at every game in the front row. She told me last week this would happen. According to her, Addie and her family were told that Iowa would run an up tempo style offense and nothing could be further from the truth. Addie's family felt as though JJ was not honest with them. I have met the Deal's and they are a wonderful family who loved what Iowa was selling, but they felt the sales job was not a reality. Don't be surprised if Addie ends up at UCLA, Minnesota or Ohio State. I will add that the Deals have spoken with the Woliczko's. Acknowledging that Addie definitely needs more work, JJ can't create an environment where 5 star players walk away. It is a bad look.

She had a chance to start 3 games. No coincidence it was maybe our three worst games of the year. When given opportunities she looked completely lost and slow. Not a big loss.
Not true, The first game she started, (basically, she came in the first 30 seconds of the OSU game) was her best game. Amazingly its also the one where she got the most minutes, as were her two other 17, 18 point games. Everytime something like this happens, I have to wonder what impact social media sites like this play in these decisions. I hope her parents weren't on here, because it was pretty ugly at times.

Maybe because we lacked BADLY for quality guard play the entire season, and worse once Mccabe got hurt.

This isn’t good no matter how you feel about how Deal played.
Why not? Deal gets a new start, and Iowa has the chance to upgrade the position. A potential win-win.

And don't forget that just because someone comes in with a 5-star rep doesn't mean they'll be a star. Some never pan out. Some never improve. Some don't fit the system. There are plenty of reasons why things don't work out, which is why recruiting is often as much art as science.

Yeah playing for a one star coach.
Wow. You'd think Deal was the next Caitlin Clark. Based on how Deal played, she probably got more minutes than she deserved. Her foot speed is slow, her lateral movement is slow, and her shot is slow. Maybe if she loses weight and works on her quickness, she could become effective, but I never saw anything that told me she's a future star. Looks like it could be addition by subtraction if Jan can find the right replacement.

There's very little doubt we ARE going the wrong way. People better hope this doesn't send a red flag at our next California recruit joining us next year or this will get UGLY. Just FYI one of the biggest things that landed MW was Iowa's "family culture". If we have 3 or 4 young players hit the road, thats a really bad look....

This seems short-sighted by Deal. I'm sure Jan would've loved to go more up-tempo but didn't have the ball-handling to do so, nor the passing to capitalize on fast breaks consistently (And Deal certainly didn't provide either). Her best players were in the post, so the offense revolved around them in half-court sets. Do you really think Jan was fighting Lisa's up-tempo offense in the Clark years? She likely designed many of those sets

It's unfortunate and feels like bad timing and fit for both parties. I wish Deal would've committed to developing this offseason and helped allow up-tempo to become a reality. But its the NIL era and I'm sure teams were offering her absurd $, while Iowa wisely refused to allocate money from their productive players to someone that had yet to produce

That's my biggest concern. That MW will reconsider her commitment.

Deal did not look comfortable most of the year, interviews, ball handling, turnovers, defense. Did not look like a top 20 player to me. Probably headed back home somewhere. Jan may be brutally honest with players, who knows. Honestly, Ava, Hannah, Chit and Journey looked the part. Stremlow is too slow as well. Layla, regressed, seemed to have zero confidence by year end. Other teams abused her. Jan hardly used the bench in the end. Bad message to players. Surprised, yes. Tegan will go too. Same issue. Layla 50/50 she goes to Washington, Teegan to Wisconsin. Should have suspended Rodriguez and that whole issue messed up the team as well.

Sounds like a win-win. Or at least a win for Iowa, depending on how Jan fills in that roster spot. Deal had one good game, and never seemed to improve, especially for someone with her rep. A change of scenery may do her good, and Iowa will have a chance to improve.
IF Jan lands quality players The list of needs just got longer, and this is not the end evidently.
