This may have been discussed, if so ignore. Has anyone ever come up with an all time MSU team by position?
Here is mine:
1B -- Will Clark
2B -- Jeffery Ray (others may be better open to change)
SS -- Paul Petrulis (only SS at state to be named All-American, but open to change)
3B -- Travis Chapman (Young was good, but Chap did and meant more to his team)
C -- Ed Easley
OF -- Rafael Palmerio
OF -- Nat Showalter
OF -- Brad Corley (look at all the All-American honors, but willing to replace)
DH -- Tommy Raffo
P -- Eric DuBose
P -- Paul Maholm
P -- Jeff Brantley
Closer -- Bobby Thigpen
Edit Note: That's why I wanted to do this, just to generate the near impossible discussion of how to field the 9 positions and 3 weekend starters. I added the DH and Closer since they are relevant in today's game. However, I am a baseball pureist and think you shouldn't have a closer or dh.

Replace Corley with Dan Van Cleve.
Put Thigpen as a closer and Brantley as Starting Pitcher.

I would have to put Maniscalco at ss. We have had so many outstanding outfielders it would be hard to know where to start, but that Corley pick did give me a chuckle. Hard to argue against Easley at catcher. Of course Clark would be at first and Raffy in the outfield. Have to put Brantley in there also.

I haven't seen in this thread a mention of a single player off the 1989 team. Is there no love for Pete Young or Tommy Raffo? (now see Costanza's mention of Masters but not even an everyday starter)

Raffo and Richard Lee are 2 of the 5 best hitters we've ever had and I haven't seen them mentioned.

I realize there are only so many slots. Need a DH.

Bulldog Bruce should be in that list. Also, some guy named Palmeiro.

Otherwise, that's a great lineup.

Brian Wiese or Richard Lee definitely over Corley. Agree w/ Costanza on Castoria..Put Masters at 2b and leaving off Palmeiro is a bit ridiculous..

would we have fans putting a guy in their all-time lineup who was lazy and flipped off his own fans after getting called out on it. Unless dude was being sarcastic, which I certainly hope is the case.

...and I should have included all of the people y'all mentioned, so I've added them in...

...until proven otherwise, I choose to believe Maniscalco is the finest shortstop we've ever had.

but if I was fielding a team tommorrow, I'd take Freeman b/c he could field pretty well and hit.

His MLB stats are modest and easy to find, but i have no idea what he did at State, other than attend.

was a great defender for us, no doubt, probably the best. Great range to be so damn slow.

A more complete player was probably Jon Shave - good bat, good speed, good enough glove. Others I liked: Steve D'Ercole. David Klipstein. Bob Parker.

But I wouldn't have a big problem listing him as the all-time SS. Not quite as good defensively as Maniscalco, but better offensively.

but he spent time at other positions, so I felt like he was better suited as a utility guy for my team, and if Maniscalco was a little bit better offensively, I would have put him there. So, I felt like Hildreth was the best "all-around" pick, even though he clearly was not as good a defensive player as a Maniscalco. In my opinion, of course.

Although, my team is so loaded offensively, I don't really think it would matter much if one position was a little bit weaker than the others offensively.

smooth SS. It would be hard not to put him in that slot considering that All America teams are a dime a dozen now and were not a big deal in the late 40's. He was known as one of the best fielding shortstops in the majors for a lot of years. Have no idea about his offense at State, but in those days a solid fielder was what they looked for. You know, they didn't have steroids to bulk their SS's up back then.

the years. It will probably never happen, but he was one of the best 2B in the majors in his era. Late 20's and 30's. He was Jewish and was vicitm of a lot a racism throughout his career. Stats:

Don't want to forget these great ones from the past. Hugh Critz from Starkville and Willie Mitchell are a couple you might want to do a search on if you don't know much about them. Boo Ferris was a great one for the Red Sox before he hurt his arm. Del Unser was a hell of a hitter and Mike Proffitt a very tough pitcher.
