Pete Boone will be firmly in control of handling this situation. That's gotta be a good thing, right?

I mean, there is no scenario you can think of that makes that ok. A punch? Yeah, I can come up with many.

You talk **** about a guy's wife, a punch in the face is OK.

Yes, AK is quite the drinker. You can't go to The Library on the weekend without seeing him. I've been somewhat hoping that he'd get in trouble in some fashion that wasn't bad enough for us to fire him but would be bad enough to scare off other schools if he does have success.

We'll see how this plays out though. I could see this be bad enough for him to lose his job.

you know good and well which part is going to be the headliner and the deal-killer for Kennedy.

That "bad word" is 10X more potent than a simple assault due to the fact that the coach is from that good ol' hotbed of simmering racial tensions in Mississippi.

I think Kennedy has singlehandedly put the once-improving image of Mississippi, and Ole Miss in particular, back about 30 years on the national stage. I just hope the media doesn't mix up the universities on this one.

this is going to be a huge deal. The only shot he has is to say that he had gone out with his old Cincy buddies, only had one drink but forgot he had taken some cold medicine earlier. It was late, he was tired, and he's very very sorry.

If he tries to defend this or justify it in some way, or if UM tries TOO hard to rally around him, the national media will swarm Oxford and set MS back 30 years in public race relations perception. The comparisons will then be made broader to draw in the whole region... the south didn't vote for Obama... Auburn hired a loser coach over a black Gill with a pretty decent resume... M State just fired Croom... the questions surrounding the shooting/suicide of Billy Joe... you see how this can snow ball?

I'll admit that probably represents the worst case scenario, but don't think for a minute it can't get that bad.

What?.. Is Boone gonna bail him out of the drunk tank this morning and let him sit bleary eyed on the bench tonight in front of high def cameras?

I'd have to guess... uh... no.

after edit: I apologize. I underestimated the idiocy of Pete Boone. Evidently they're going to let the accused drunk racist sit on the bench tonight.

you have to wonder if he will even be on the bench for the rest of the season. Or ever again.

Yep, just looking, but I think this is only one of two nationally televised ESPN games on our schedule, and he picks the night before to get arrested. That is definitely some sports god work right there. The guy has been drinking and raising hell since he got the job, but this happens the night before a game on ESPN, so that he'll be noticeably absent from the bench, and we'll have to hear about it all game.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind if we just hired Michael White and got it over with. Former point guards seem to work out well for us, right Rod?

the opening of her African girls school, the interviewer asked, "Why are there no white girls here?"

Oprah's response: "I didn't come here to help white girls."

We all have racist tendencies.

Lock it.

I'm glad he had sense enough to take a cab, but how else is going to get around Cincy? Steal the team bus?

The worst thing about this is most people in America don't know the difference between MSU and umiss. Unfortunately, a lot of ignoramuses are going to tie us to this. MSU is the team playing Cinncinnati, not umiss. It's going to be easier for the dubmasses of the world to tie us to this than umiss.

they'll talk about "the courage" that the Ole Miss team is showing in the face of adversity. Then they'll talk about Jimmy Valvano for about a half.

The sad thing is, I'm not at all surprised this has happened, and I don't think any of our fans should be. AK spends a ton of time out drinking and partying. That's just his thing. It was only a matter of time before he got in trouble. Now, I wish there wasn't a claim of racial slurs out there, but the fact that he got arrested while out on the town doesn't surprise me at all.

the supposed once improving image you speak of still hasnt hit the Chicago 'burbs, or out here in Des Moines. people still see Mississippi as a state with lots of repeating letters, and still racist and oppressive as ever.

its a battle ive fought for 5 years now, and itll pretty much never end. racism is everywhere, but just like the Northeast being known for being liberal(though liberals exist in droves all over the country), the South is known as racists(though racists exist in droves all over).
it sucks, but its what the region is known for.

Now Boone has to decide whether to push for no buy-out and embroil the University in a protracted breach of contract fight, or pay him something to get rid of him. Kennedy's 40. He won't likely coach again for a while. You gotta think AK is angling for some jack to walk.

Well I do think we had some good things going for us the past few years...

-All of the positive publicity that State got for hiring Croom
-The presidential debate at Ole Miss
-The relatively good national perception of Mississippi's response to Katrina - while not specifically dealing with race, I think this helped promote the state as more competent overall than our neighbors to the southwest.

Whatever positive impression those three and other events might have had, may well be overshadowed by the media attention on this.

And while I am not surprised that Chicago still sees Mississippi as racist, it is not the bellwether I would have picked for a median gauge of American sentiment.

The irony in all of this for me personally, is that when I was young and went to visit family in northern Kentucky at Christmastime, I saw footage on the Cincinnati news stations about Christmas KKK marches in downtown Cincinnati every year like clockwork. It looked like something straight out of the Jerry Springer show. Having lived in Mississippi for over 30 years, I can't recall ever seeing a KKK march here. Now I know we still have our fair share of Klan members and racists, but I just find this all particularly strange.

EDIT: As much as we have our image of being racist, I choose to appreciate the silver lining that as a result, Mississippi is not a place where all of the rich snowbird Northeast liberals choose to overwinter.

there is a very big difference even if their skin color is somewhat the same. When I say Indian, I do not mean Native American, either.

because it's probably just AK's word against a cabbie's word. if there is evidence of the punch, though, it could be trouble for AK.

it will also be interesting to see what boone does, and if AK's contract has any personal conduct clauses.

They've now changed the headline, but I took a screenshot of it before they did (I'm too computer illiterate to post that though). The people in the commenters section had to inform the author that it was actually the Ole Miss coach. Sadly, this probably isn't the first and won't be the last time that this happens with this story.
