Figuring out what a high school kid is going to be able to do vs 22 and 23 year old men must be a tough job! I guess that is why they make the big bucks!
Deanna hits the nail on the head, as do you. College Football is a different animal than high school. You are no longer the big fish in the little pond. Some people find out that they don't have the work ethic to succeed, sometimes it is coaching, and sometimes recruiting services mess up and rank prospects too high or too low for whatever reason. I can tell you one thing, Sage Surratt is a much better football player than his ranking coming out of high school. It also helps that Wake Forest has a hell of a football coach leading the team.

You are aware that they played Clemson in the ACC Title game in 2015 right?? That is a long ways removed from the first Mack Brown Era. I swear some of you just get on here and type stuff that you think makes you sound smart without doing any research. Could have easily won that game if the refs knew what offsides actually was on an onside kick, but thats neither here nor there.
I was well aware of 2015. With all those recruiting classes and loads of great talent, ONE great season? I guess when you are a UNC guy, you have to cling to whatever hope you can until basketball season starts. When you have that kind of talent year after year, you need better than one truly great season and then a cosmic flame out. Does Duke recruit better athletes in football than UNC? Not hardly. They had an awesome 2013, and year to year, Duke football has been as consistent a winner over the last decade...without all the off the field drama.

Us Wake fans like to joke about the Wake “bump”. If a recruit commits early and he is a low three star, he will remain a low three star regardless of his growth physically or on field performance. A similar player could decommit and sign with another school and his ranking will magically go up.

Surratt could have signed with FSU and been a five star (joking, sort of). If you saw him absolutely dominate on the football field and basketball court, yet rank him as a two star, then you might be in the wrong profession. He might be the only reason his brother received a scholarship to play QB. He made his stats look good by catching everything he threw.

Averaging a class that is around 30th in the country and around 6th-8th in the ACC is not great recruiting. Do some research before you start spouting off facts that don’t back up your claims. Duke has been a consistent winner since David Cutcliffe showed up in Durham. Heck of a football coach and gets more out of his kids than most would. Put any other coach in Durham and the results would mirror the kids they recruit.

This was the point I was trying to get you to see. UNC consistently has the best recruiting classes of any college in NC. UNC historically gets less out of more. Duke can get more out of less. The reason...you just said it. Coaching.

You never said anything about just the state of NC. You just said they always have great talent and suck with it essentially. The times are a changing though I feel.

I don’t know many UNC fans who would disagree that Cutcliffe is a really good coach, and that Duke and Wake do a great job of developing 5th year seniors and doing well with them.
But this argument is like saying that Coach K is a failure because he has the number one or two recruiting classes in the country every year, but doesn’t win a national championship every year or two.
There is a lot that goes into winning consistently. I believe the pieces are in place for Carolina to be one of the top two or three programs in the ACC regularly. Didn’t feel that way with Butch Davis or Fedora. Really didn’t feel that way completely in the first Mack Brown era. But I’m cautiously optimistic this time around.
We can debate it, and that’s fun. But the next two years will tell the tale. If some of you are right, I’ll acknowledge it. And if I’m right, I promise not to gloat. At least not on here.

You have a good coach back now. You aren’t wrong to feel that way. I’m a second generation ECU graduate. I have seen the Pirates have terrible recruiting classes and yet they are able to win consistently against regional opponents, including UNC. Of course, things have changed a lot recently down East. Shows what bad coaching and bad recruiting will get you.

UNC set themselves up for success by bringing a proven leader back as head coach.

You might not have liked Fedora and Davis, but the uNC fan base was pretty excited about both.

Every time they hire a new coach all we hear is, “the sleeping giant is awake! Davis is going to take us to championship status like he did at Miami! We will be national championship contenders and dominate the conference within 3 years! Fed spread baby!!! The Hat is going to make this sleeping giant unstoppable!”

I hope y’all understand if the other fan bases roll their collective eyes when they hear, “Mack is back! We will dominate the Coastal!”

It’s like a bunch of drug addicts dressed in matching blue shirts saying “we’re going to quit this time!”

You’re a deacon fan. When’s the last time y’all played in a meaningful football or basketball game? How many national championship in basketball? How many conference titles in football before or after expansion. Y’all stink every year at both and when you were good at basketball you still couldn’t get to the elite 8. I’d not really crow too much. Y’all dressed up in road yellow hoping to win in anything is like a bunch of ugly boys in a stag line.

Who brought up that wussy indoor game called basketball?

Wake last won an ACC championship in football in 2006. That was after expansion. They played Calvin Johnson (Megatron) and Georgia Tech.

For comparison, I wasn’t even alive the last time uNC won the ACC.

has wake ever been ranked in the top ten in football at the end of the year? That wussy game is the biggest draw of fans by far in the state of nc.

I think what you are doing is called “moving the goal posts”

If I say yes, are you going to say’ “yeah, but have they ever laid a golden egg?”

Didn’t say I didn’t like Davis or Fedora. I didn’t believe in Butch from the start because of my long held belief that if you ever coached in the state of Florida, you cheat. I think that held true.
As for Fedora, I liked his energy. Still think he was a much better coach than he received credit for. But the ridiculous number of injuries and the inability to finish close games wore him down. At the end, he lost his players and the fans.
I may not be like a lot of my Tarheel brethren, but I don’t get all giddy every time we get a new coach. But this time, I’m cautiously optimistic because I think the combination of recruiting and game day coaching are both there. Yes, they’ve lost (and won) some close ones. They still can’t finish all the time when they should. If that’s still happening next year, I’ll be much less optimistic.
But, perhaps unlike my brother fans, I’m not comparing us to anybody else in the Big Four. Until further notice, we’re all chasing Clemson. For a change, I think UNC has the best chance to get there. We’ll see.

That’s pretty reasonable.
