Showing my age I’m sure…but WHO? Back in my day MSU Music Makers brought in some pretty big acts. But back then the Hump wasn’t that different in capacity from the big arenas. It absolutely is now.

Columbus is also the 14th largest city in the US which helps a lot when it comes to things like this. It's easy to get bands booked as Ohio has multiple places where big bands play all the time.

Sincerely,

A disgruntled state fan who married an OSU gal.

Ohio State has an enrollment of over 60,000 and Columbus has a metro population over 2,000,000. The risk is much smaller to put on a concert like that. This compares to an enrollment of about 25,000 and the Golden Triangle population of about 130,000
Auburn, Oxford, Stillwater etc etc etc all have done it. This isn't some big city trend. But the fact it's in the stadium on a college campus also says something. Columbus has venues but this is on school property. State couldn't do a huge festival style concert weekend, but they we could easy host a big act.

Plus, Ohio Stadium seats about 40,000 more people than Davis Wade. It’s about 100,000 vs 60,000 for football. Assumedly the difference would be the same for a concert, even if the setup and overall capacity is different.

A concert in the Hump on a non football weekend would pull people. Honestly if you set it up for when Ole Miss doesn't have a home game then you get those students coming over also.

For whatever reason, Music Makers isn't pulling the acts it used to.

Keep making excuses...You can't tell me this concert wouldn't have a MASSIVE amount of people there. It's not just limited to Golden Triangle folks. hahaha

We regularly have 50-60k show up for a pretty underwhelming (lately) football team, you're telling me we couldn't have 60k show up for one concert on one night with the right headliner?

College football popularity >>>> indie band popularity
indie band??

I've posted about this several times, so I won't waste too much time going down the list again, but other schools have had Metallica, Morgan Wallen, Coldplay, etc. I for one am have not been talking about indie bands. We need to host a headliner at least once in our lives just to show we have a pulse.

It's the venue size for the most part. The Hump just isn't big enough for big acts anymore.

Black Crows at the Amphitheater and Garth Brooks at The Hump in the early 90's as well...
That Crows show was outstanding. So was Blues Traveler with the Allman Bros.
I know in my 4 years at the amphitheater we had Jesus Jones, WSP, Crowes, BT/ABB, Hank Williams, Jr, WSP again
The Hump was mostly country acts - Garth, Travis Tritt, and Vince Gill.
Even had the Indigo Girls at the Tin Gym.

But, the economics of music has changed so much I can totally understand why we can't bring in as many acts.
Acts now make their money of tours instead of record sales - and they work to maximize that. Smaller areas fall by the wayside

Not quite right.

It’s not the venue size… It’s more so the population and the venue varieties…

The Hump would be great to use in the summer… but there are no students around.

In the winter, basketball is king so the Hump is more difficult to schedule… but still possible.

The amphitheater isn’t going to attract a lot of people from outside because there isn’t permanent seating (and MSU rightly doesn’t want a permanent seating setup there)

So Starkville would need an Amphitheatre with seats as well…

But is it that high a priority?

Right now, no. But if you build a clientele, yes.

Saw the red Clay strays last night for the first time. If I could have swung it logistically, I would have stayed for nights 2 and 3.

At MSU, I got a chance to see some great concerts. – Kansas, 38 Special, Huey Lewis, and Pat Benatar come to mind when I think of days going to music maker productions.

anyone remember Widespread Panic at the Amphitheater back in the 90s? Music Makers wasn't expecting that crowd! Do they not use the Amphitheater anymore?

I do. I was working the Russel St. Chevron at the time. The closest place to the amphitheater to buy beer. By the time I closed I had sold over $10,000 worth of beer. The only thing left were some bottles of king cobra and one single solitary case of Budwieser.
