Some fans suck.

General rule of thumb.... if you wouldn't want someone tweeting you what you're about to tweet a college student, then stop and re-examine how you got to that point in life.

If you tweet insults to ANY of our players (I'll even include Sidney here) then you aren't a fan. You need to get a 17ing life.

There's huge difference between being critical and being a jackass. Too bad we have so many of the latter.

I can't lie - I tweeted at Sidney when after his last game - he tweeted negative about State.

Really? I think there are a LOT of folks on here that wouldn't think twice about tweeting a player to tell them how much they suck. I've never understood the hatred towards some of our players that our fans express.

I just wouldn't want any player to leave Starkville with that kind of taste in their mouth.

Russell could've thrown 10 picks in the bowl game, and it wouldn't justify State fans insulting him on twitter. It's just ridiculous to not treat people decently. We can't afford to mistreat our players (and especially our better ones). Unless someone is actively hurting our school's image (and this is where we start venturing into Sidney territory) I don't think there's any reason not to make our athletes feel loved and appreciated. We want them to be talking us up for years to come. They are our most powerful recruiting tool.

I agree but..

In my opinion it might be a good thing for a person like Tyler to see these tweets - he seems to be the type that feeds off criticism. MJ was one of those types and many people I know accomplished great things because someone else said they sucked/couldn't do it/etc..

Yes you have douchebags that say stupid **** on twitter, but Russell seems to use it as fuel. I like that. Let's hope it translates to results in 2013.

History repeats itself amongst the absolute worst fanbase in the country. Tony Shell, Todd Jordan, Derrick Taite, Matt Wyatt, Wayne Madkin, Kevin Fant, Mike Henig, Omarr Conner, Tyson Lee, Chris Relf, Tyler Russell....just another in a long line of MSU QBs who've been booed and ridiculed way more than they could ever deserve. One guy didn't make that list....Sleepy Robinson...and that's because injury cut his career short before he lost a game he shouldn't have in the eyes of idiot Mississippians. Alot of those led to some pretty hard feelings, I few of which I've seen first hand. Our fans literally just don't get it. Ever that or they flat just don't care.

Yeah, we haven't won that much, but we as fans have hurt much more than we should have.

Let's not forget this thread...

http://forums.sixpackspeak.com/showthread.php?100450-From-Russell-s-mom-on-genes

I think that thread saw some posters drawing some pretty bold lines on when, where and how a fanbase can treat it's college-aged athletes. It was not surprising to me which side of the line some of the guy's fell on.

There is no way Russell should hear anything personally from his fanbase other than "try harder next time" or "you know you can do better." He's our starting QB by no fault of his own, and that surely shouldn't draw personal attacks from anyone - MUCH LESS his own fanbase! If you want to complain about him starting, take it to the coach...and then ask yourself which one of you gets paid the big bucks to actually run a football team.

This is rich, considering the Sixpack was built upon trashing players.

Dontae Walker, anyone?

If Michael Jordan ever had a Bulls fan tell him he sucked

He would have found out who they were and formulated an elaborate scheme to get them fired from their job, steal their wife, and feed them their own parents in a bowl of chili.

(All I'm saying is the man can hold a grudge)

Actually, it was built on freely criticizing the AD and coaches.

Sure, some on here are guilty of going overboard with bashing players. Even then, it's not the same as tweeting a player with brutal criticism.

I honestly think he was trolled by Rebears who were posing as state fans. Just like the rest of the recruits who dealt with the madness this past Feb. I will be the first to admit, I question Tyler's Qb vision and some of his decision making but never his effort. If Mullen thinks he gives us the best chance to win, I am for it.

If I'm Mullen I'm not letting any of my players ever talk to these ESPN jackasses again. Articles like this only hurt MSU. Are there some stupid *** fans? Yeah, but I know for a fact Snead was the most hated man in Oxford when he was there, yet he didn't get an article like this talking about how UM fans suck. LSU's QB gets death threats from "fans" year in and year out and they don't write articles about how bad their fans hate players.

Tyler is one of the most liked and respected guys amongst fans and his teammates, yet there is an article bashing our fans on ESPN. God I hate those 17ers.

What the 17 would we do without Twitter?

Why do all of these players have Twitter accounts? If things are good, you can put out your good stuff etc., but It gives a direct link back to you when
things aren't going great, just ask Dan Mullen.

Twitter should be banned for all players during the season, no exceptions.

The article is intended to slam State fans. Russell's 2nd half wasn't disappointing - his half of a bowl game.

But let's look at the bio of the author. Since he writes for ESPN, he doesn't have any biases.**

Eric Aschoff joined ESPN.com in 2011 after spending four years covering the University of Florida for The Gainesville Sun. He grew up in Oxford, Miss., before attending UF, graduating with a B.S. in journalism.

Hey, i've got a great idea! Dont 17ing read your twitter feed if it bothers you so much! Every college qb goes through this and they seem to be able to handle the heat.

when Sydney tweeted "I'm Out" after his last game I tweeted "of biscuits?" back at him. Sorry for not being a fan I guess.

Yeah, if we are going to idolize them when they are awesome it's only fair that they should handle a little criticism when they falter. Now there is a line to not cross but blind admiration is just retarded.

I had a similar feeling when I saw this:

In the past few months, Russell has spent more time reading over criticism-filled tweets sent his way than he'd like to remember. This isn't new development for college athletes, but what does sting a little is when those comments come from so-called Mississippi State fans.

Emphasis mine.

That's your solution?

When damn near everyone under the age of 40 in this country is connected to social media in some way, the best course of action is for a 21 year old to stop reading his twitter feed because some sad 35 year old nutsack in a cubicle wants to sound off on how bad you suck? How about the sad 35 year old nutsack gets a life?

There is a huge difference in discussing the performance of a player among friends, co-workers, or message boards versus directly tweeting or facebooking him/her. They shouldn't be inundated with criticisms from losers with a smart phone. They get enough coaching from... oh who are those people... oh yeah, the coaches. As much as you want to think you have some right to throw your 2 cents in directly to a player because you buy a ticket and give some money to the athletic department, you have no business going there.

General rule of thumb: Don't tweet or facebook something that you wouldn't say directly to that person's face.

Also, from some of the posts, I'm getting the feeling that thinking it's wrong to directly tweet a college player about how bad he is playing is somehow akin to having sheepish, blind admiration. It's not. It's simply being a normal human being.

I would like to add there is a big difference in "Not TR's best day. I think Dak should get some PT" vs "YOU SUCK RUSSLE AND I HOPE YOU TRANSFER!"

One thing that strikes me about Russell's twitter

Is that he is an outdoorsman. It is a reminder that these guys are real people and have lives outside football. It helped me to curb my anger after the bowl game. Although I never tweet anything @ them.

I enjoy seeing his outdoors pictures.

I was never angry with Russell in the least

He just had a bad day. We all have them. But he's still the best QB we've had at MSU in a LONG time, maybe forever. I like the guy and think he does a great job. It wasn't like he was trying to play a bad game. Disappointed that we lost, sure ... but no anger.

I drove all the way over there, took days off from work, took lots of shots at mavericks, and dropped a ton of cash in Jacksonville. I was just happy he decided to have a game like that in Jacksonville rather than Lexington or Troy

I wasn't angry with Russell either. I was pissed at our coaching staff for leaving him in WAY past the point he should have been taken out in favor of Dak. Not saying TR should have lost his starting position, just that there were games in which he should have been replaced for the remainder of the game. Was also frustrated by the unimaginative play-calling.

I was pissed about that too. But when we found out that Dak was having surgery on his toe, I wonder if he was physically able to play much more than he did in that game.

Not sure if the originall,

Dontae Walker, anyone?

But no one yet has caught on that Travis posted in this thread and the irony of his post. Been here since day 1 and it gives one pause about what sixpack started out as and what it has become. Not saying it's a bad thing just as I get older I notice this stuff. carry on.

Yet another reason to use Twitter for information rather than for your own voice when you don't personally know someone.

Twitter rule for me: Lurk if you don't know them, tweet if you do. It is simple.
