In the past few months, Russell has spent more time reading over criticism-filled tweets sent his way than he'd like to remember. This isn't new development for college athletes, but what does sting a little is when those comments come from so-called Mississippi State fans.
When damn near everyone under the age of 40 in this country is connected to social media in some way, the best course of action is for a 21 year old to stop reading his twitter feed because some sad 35 year old nutsack in a cubicle wants to sound off on how bad you suck? How about the sad 35 year old nutsack gets a life?
There is a huge difference in discussing the performance of a player among friends, co-workers, or message boards versus directly tweeting or facebooking him/her. They shouldn't be inundated with criticisms from losers with a smart phone. They get enough coaching from... oh who are those people... oh yeah, the coaches. As much as you want to think you have some right to throw your 2 cents in directly to a player because you buy a ticket and give some money to the athletic department, you have no business going there.
General rule of thumb: Don't tweet or facebook something that you wouldn't say directly to that person's face.
Also, from some of the posts, I'm getting the feeling that thinking it's wrong to directly tweet a college player about how bad he is playing is somehow akin to having sheepish, blind admiration. It's not. It's simply being a normal human being.
