They aren't negatively judge by some people, and to the extent they are, they are probably able to overcome negative first impressions by being competent and/or intelligent and/or pleasant. Not everybody is in a position to do that.

If they have the intelligence to get a JD or MD, the cost of an inoffensive tattoo is usually going to be small, particularly compared to their earnings. To the extent it ever cost them significant compensation, they'd likely never know b/c it wouldn't be communicated to them why they left a negative impression.

Exactly. Again, if you are looking at jobs at or near minimum wage, you don't need to be doing anything to further limit your options. A disinterested observer could probably pretty accurately peg who is really going to have no trouble overcoming "normal" tattoos and who needs to maintain every advantage they can by the time they're 16. Of course the 16 year old or 18 year old or 22 year old that can least afford to add any potential disadvantage is exactly the type that would be least likely to recognize that fact.
We should have never allowed women to get tattoos and piercings. The ones with low impulse control have them scattered all over their bodies in no particular order like my toddlers used to do to their Barbie dolls when I gave them stickers. But it does signal to others at a bar or club, "Hey, I have low-pulse control. Go ahead. You might have a chance." Smart, college educated women with limited exposure to women's studies courses and more future-time orientation know how to limit body modification.

Only this board would turn a discussion about ordering at Wendy's drive-through into an argument about socialism. Sometimes, it's OK to just let a discussion go. We don't have to take every opportunity possible to make a post into a political argument.

Dorn's so warped by his pansy assed librul political views that he's calling a kale salad tasty, and you want us to just let it go? Do you even understand how the internet or message boards work?

Next he's going to talk about putting lite ranch on his chicken tenders. You going to let that go too?

I mean, that's socially acceptable as long as you hold your pinky out while you eat them.

Only because we still have a few freedoms. Now you socialists want to restrict our discussion on message boards. **

Not to address the subject, but aren't you generally a frequent commenter on political threads?
Dorn, I don't know about you, but I'm getting "Maher hanging out with Gutfeld" vibes from this thread.

No, actually I quit those for that reason. I may stray now and then, but for the most part, I tried to stay out of those discussions because they've gotten as old as watching the daily news. Therefore, I will bow out of this discussion. Have fun.

To me, doing something to yourself that restricts or limits your ability to reach your full potential is the very definition of "self harm."
But they very well may be able to reach their full potential, just not in that specific job or for that specific employer.
Again, we are talking about an entry level gas station job- that is what was being discussed when the 'self harm' comment was made- that someone cant work at bucees if they have visible tats.
$18 entry level jobs are all over the place- warehouses etc that DGA17 if a person has a visible tattoo.
If someone's fullest potential is making $18, which is what was initially cited, then cool- I am confident they can make that in a number of jobs where a visible tattoo will be acceptable.

Nicely done. You're coming around. People do have limited potential and we should be cool with that and the choices they make as long as they don't cause harm to others.

ETA: Also, you were the one that referenced "self-harm" originally. That sounds like cutting or suicide attempts or something. "Self-inflicted harm" or "self-inflicted injury" to me is a turn of phrase that does not imply physical harm or injury. You could also refer to it as an "own goal" (to put in the pansy communist sport terms that I assume you prefer**)
'Self inflicted harm' is different from 'self harm'. Got it. Not sure how, since both involve the person that is harmed doing the harming, but noted for future posts- I will specify that the harm one does to one's self is inflicted so as to not confuse anyone with other ways harm to one's self can be implemented.

^ I honestly get what you are saying, even though they do both sound basically the same.

As for 'self inflicted injury' and 'self inflicted harm' not implying physical harm or injury?...I genuinely dont know how you parse that out in your mind. The term 'self inflicted gun shot would', to me, sure seems like a 'self inflicted injury'. But if those mean something different to you, fair enough- I will chalk that up to a regional colloquialism.

Ha, I do appreciate the pansy commie version. That made me chuckle.

Devil's advocate. People are living too long and too much of our population (the olds and the very olds) are living well beyond their usefulness to society. If we aren't going to push the social safety net and public pensions out to 72-75, then I say more fast food is a useful tool.
Why so many folks want to just exist in a nursing home or other similar situation is beyond me. When it comes a time I can't care for myself, or i'm in too much pain, or QOL is very low, I want the option of downing some type of pill at home.

“Tasty” and “kale” cannot be in the same sentence…..ever.

They can be, but it sure as 17 ain't the kale that's making it tasty.

I do grow some kale and like young leaves of it mixed in with other lettuces and good stuff in a salad. Not so much by itself.

The old, big leaves of kale you get in a grocery store suck ***.
