Bama opening as a 24 point favorite?

Definitely a surprise in my book...

I never bet on or against State, but doesn't 24 seem a bit high?

I expected something to the tune 12-16 points, so I do believe throughout the week that will probably come down a bit. While I morally refuse to bet on State games, that one does indeed seem tempting. As a player though...I would no doubt be using that as motivation(like anymore is actually needed).

I bet a little, and I'm not touching this one....

the chances it's a 14 point game are about the same as a 34 point game....

this thing could be all over the place, spread-wise.

They were favored at UT by 20+ points and won by 31 points. They are playing at home and we haven't played the toughest schedule. I figured they would be favored by 20+ points. And no I don't think we will lose by 20+ points and would definitely bet it. I think we will be in it the whole game with a chance to win.

I would not have expected the line on our game to be larger than the UT game. That's why.

And we just beat UT, we are undefeated, and ranked 11. It isn't exactly dumb.

umm yeah it is

I didn't realize we beat UT soundly. We escaped with a win at HOME. We weren't up 17 with UT scoring a late TD to make it a 10 point win. We were up 3 and had to make some big plays on the last drive to ice the game. If Banks doesn't strip the ball, we possibly lose because UT had all the momentum until that play.

You are right that we are undefeated and our strength of schedule is below Southern Miss. We are ranked 11th because you aren't going to find a 7-0 SEC team ranked too much lower than that. Our best win is against a 3-4 UT team. Combine that we Bama destroying everyone, then the 24 point spread shouldn't be a surprise.

No, I've already said I was taking State.

OK, so are you gonna take bama and give up the points?

Not sure how hard it is to understand. I'm not saying that Bama is 24 points better than us. I'm just saying we barely beat Tennessee in Starkville who was a 21 point dog at home against Bama and Bama won by 31. The home team gets 3 points so if UT played at Bama the spread would be like ours at 24 points. If we were playing Bama at home it would be 21 points.

Bama beat UT at home by 31 points who we barely beat at home. 24 points shouldn't be a surprise. Basically the national media and odds makers think State and UT are equal teams despite us being 7-0 and ranked #11. I think we are a much better team than UT, but the odds makers don't account for all the missed tackles we had or missed FG. They only look at stats.

Never said I was surprised. Said it was not dumb to think it would be less. Did you guess 24 or more points in the thread where we all guessed the line? Oh wait, you claim you knew it would be 20+ points all along but waited until after they announced to let us know.

Doesn't Ole Yeller die at the end...

So you're not surprised by the line, but you don't believe it either? Ok, I can see that

I don't see how being surprised by a point spread and believing we will cover correalate with each other? Bama is the better team but with Bama playing UT last week and playing LSU next week, I believe we will cover the 24 point spread. The Odds makers don't take that stuff into account. They are called "trap" games and where a lot of bettors, like myself, make their biggest money.

How's this, I was surprised by the Bama UT point spread. After seeing 21 point spread on that game, I was not surprised at our spread against bama.

Nope, I just use common sense. UT vs. Bama game is a rival game and if vegas set the odds at 21 points with Bama on the road, then it ain't hard to figure out that our game would be 20+ points in Tuscaloosa. I've actually been looking forward to betting this game after seeing the UT & Bama spread.

I think it's a little high, but I imagine they are trying to get some early money on the State side. It could come down a little after a few days, but it may not if the money is still heavy on the Bama side.

Yeah, but it aint the end, and "believing we will cover" means you don't believe it either.

This. We are not nationally respected. To get people to bet against Bama you're going to need to sweeten the pot. Vegas' goal is to get 50% of the money on each side. It has very little to do with how good each team actually is and much more to do with the betting public's perception of the teams.

I say take the points and bet the farm ... I don't think we lose by that many, not with this offense ... I also think the Defense will play hard this game
